Show r suu SPORTS Sports acrobatics championships scheduled here (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) Olympic sport, but competition has not been incorporated into the Games yet," Leite said. "We would like to see sports acrobatics in the 1996 competition, but it is more realistic to expect that to happen in the 2000 Games. Russia, China, and Bulgaria are regarded as the top three teams internationally in sports acrobatics. The U.S. as a team is somewhere in the top 10, according to Leite. Member of the Russian team have trained at the Centrum for each of the las t two summers. T ickets for the op ening ceremonies and each evening's session of competition are $7 for adult reserved seats and $5 for adult general admission. Children's (ages seven through 12) reserved seats are $3.50 and general admission is $2.50. Prices for morning sessions are $5 (reserved) and $3.50 (general admission) for adults and $2.50 (reserved) and $2 (general admission) for children. Children under six will be admitted free to either afternoon or evening competition. Gridd~rs look to big year in '94 (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5) Defensive Line: Galyean (6-1, 250, Jr; Las Vegas Clark HS) didn't even start for the T-Birds until the final four games of the season when he stepped in after an injury sidelined Arnold, but he made the most of his four starts, finishing the season with 37 tackles, including team-highs of nine tackles for losses and 6.5 sacks. He capped his year with an AWC Player of the Week award against Sac State. Joining Galyean at end will be a pair of converted linebackers, James Bleak (6-0, 220, Sr; Lincoln County !(NV)) HS)-who started most of the season at rush endand Matt Labrum (6-0, 220, Jr, Union HS), the team's leading returning tackler with 79 in '93. Also battling for time will be Rich Murray (6-1, 240, So, Las Vegas Western HS), Don Carter (6-1, 210, So, Granite HS) and Joel Wilson (6-2, 240, Jr, Emery HS), as well as a few transfers. Wilson was the starter at the start of tl\e last two seasons, but he has gone down with injuries bo~h years. Blackham (6-0, 265, Sr, Spanish Fork HS) is a fixture at nose tackle. He will be joined on the interior D-line by Justin Bauerle (6-4, 270, Sr; Las Vegas, NV) and Garett Moon (6-4, 265, So, Delta HS). Ryan Ross (6-3, 260, Jr; Murray, UT), a transfer from Snow College, Nick Gibson (6-2, 240, So, Judge Memorial HS), and returned missionary Ruben Togisala (6-0, 250, So, Bonneville HS) will provide depth. Linebackers: A versatile group of players who can play anywhere across t he back of the line will man the linebacker spots. Baird (5- 10, 200, Sr; Las Vegas, NV) was all-AWC at weak inside backer last year, but m ay move to strongside this year. MLB Dave Benedict (6-0, 225, Sr; Tempe, AZ) was the starter at the beginning of 1992 before an injury ended his season in the first gam e. Jeff Jon es (6-2, 225, So, Provo HS) is another player who showed promise as a freshman befor(l going down with an injury in last year's fall camp and should fight for a starting spot. In addition, redshirt freshmen Austin Cartwright (5-11, 200, Carbon HS) and Darin Smith (6-0, 200, Fr, American Fork HS) should battle for positions, along with a strong group of true freshmen who will join the team in the fall. Secondary: If the line is the biggest rebuilding project on offense, the secondary is its counterpart on defense. The 'Birds lost two-thirds of last year's safety rotation, and the comers who have started every game the last two years. The good news is that Anthony Brown (5-10, 200, Sr; Sacramento) returns at strong safety, while Duston Connaughton (6-2, 210, So, Judge Memorial HS) and Donnie Yantis (6-0, 205, Sr; Phoenix) return as experienced backs who should fill the safety spots. Paul Gallardo (6-2, 180, Jr; Glendale, AZ) could emerge as a starter. Comerback is another matter however. After starting his freshman year, Tyler Johnson (6-0, 180, Sr, Bingham HS) has missed one year with an injury and served as a backup. He should step into one of the starting slots, while the other position could be a battle between sophomore Mike Brown (6-0, 190, San Juan HS - an all-state quarterback in high school - Colby Knight (5-10, 175, RS Fr, American Fork HS), Ron Talbot (5-1 1, 185, RS Fr; Nyssa, OR), Danny Aragon (6-1 , 195, Jr, Salt Lake City), and Marlon Bacon (6-2, 195, Jr, Mohave, CA). Special Teams: The 'Birds are fairly set at the return positions, with Cu thbertson the incumbent on the punt teams and Shawn Jones and Cuthbertson on kickoff returns, but the kickers and punters are less settled. VanWoerkom and Gallardo both punted last year and one should land the job, while the kicking duties could be handled by any one of a number of players, including returned missionary Jason Haslam, who holds the school-record for PATs in a season, transfer Benji Nelson (Snow JC), or one of a number of walkons. 911 S.
