M, t- bW,;1,- Reading Conference set this week pair of nationally recognized educators will be included on the schedule of events of the 14th annual Southern Utah University Reading Conference which begins here July 7. Both Marion Dane Bauer, author of the 1987 Newbery Honor Book, "On My Honor," and Nancy Johnson, a national educational consultant for over 16 years and president of Creative Consultants, Beaver Creek, Ohio, will make major presentations during the two-day conference. "This conference is specifically planned to help improve reading and language arts programs," Gayle Garrett, director of the SUU College of Education Reading Clinic and reading conference director, said. "Presentations during the conference should be valuable and enriching for faculty and staff members in elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools." Bauer, in addition to giving a keynote speech, will be honored at an Author's Award Luncheon July 8. Conference participants may attend the luncheon. Bauer is active in the Minneapolis children's book community and teaches fiction writing to adults. Johnson, who emphasizes the critical A importance of parents and teachers reinforcing one anothel', will make presentations on thinking and questioning skills and on getting parental involvement in education. "Specialists in reading, language arts, and special education will give presentations and workshops throughout the two days," Garrett explains. "Many reading exhibits and displays of new programs and strategies will be available, and an idea exchange will be included." Participants in the conference are asked to provide 50 copies of one reading idea or activity to share with others attending. Cost for attending the conference varies, depending on whether a student is taking the course for no credit ($35), or is attending the conference for undergraduate ($78) or graduate ($95) credit. Regular summer school students may attend the conference sessions for a $35 additional lab fee. Enrollment is not limited, but students wishing to attend the conference are encouraged to preregister through Garrett (801) 586-7814 or at the SUU Registrar's Office in the Administration Building (801) 586-7715. Registration may also be completed at the first session of the conference. Marion Dane Bauer '94-95 cheer squad named Dr. Joann Bowns Joann Bowns is honored D r. Joann Bowns, professor of zoology, has been named recipient of the 1993-94 "Outstanding Educator" award at Southern Utah University. Three other SUU faculty members have also been recognized as distinguished educators under the Rulon A. Jones Distinguished Educator Awards program at the University. The distinguished educators for the year are Dr. Wayne Hinton, professor of history and head of the department of behavioral and social sciences; Dr. Lee Morrell, professor of chemistry; and Jean Newville, associate professor of criminal justice. Also recognized at recent commencement activities as outstanding staff members were Daphne Dalley, director of the University's "Turning Point" program, and Cal Rollins, director of annual giving. Dr. Bowns, who joined the SUU faculty in 1965, holds BS and MS degrees from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She is credited with taking a personal interest in students which has helped enable SUU to place a high percentage of its applicants in medical, dental, and veterinary medicine schools. She also gives frequent community presentations on many health-related topics. "Dr. Bowns is an example to all of us at the university for her dedication, excellence, and service; she is truly deserving of the recognition," Gerald R. Sherratt, president of the University, said in presenting the award. cheer squad representing 10 high schools, nine of them in Utah, has been named to lead the fan support for Southern Utah University athletic teams during the 1994-95 school year. The 13-memher squad was selected after extensive tryout competition. Included in the group which will cheer at all home football and men's and women's basketball games are four freshmen, seven sophomores, and two juniors. "This is a very dedicated group of young men and women," Tammy Melton, adviser to the cheer club said. "They spend tons of time practicing, performing, and participating in campus and community service projects. Their school year starts Aug. 8 when they arrive on campus to begin practice for an Aug. 15-18 summer camp in Denver, Colo. Then the first home football game is Sept. 3." Each member of the cheer squad receives a half-tuition activity scholarship.
