Show PAGE 6 • THE THUNDERBIRD • TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1994 ..,POIUS KC Kangaroos jutnp all over 'Birds BY STEPHEN ROHRBEC K .,. Guard And:y Wa rd goes up scrong for cwo of his 12 points. Thunderbird Sports Writer At home this season, the Thunderbirds have been an exceptional team, piling up an impressive 12-1 record. On the road they are a different team. The 'Birds have been unimpressive on the road, suffe ring through a 1-9 road record. It was no different Saturday as SUU lost yet another away loss to Missouri-Kansas C ity, 77-68. Early on, it appeared that the 'Birds had finally found the road consistency they had lacked all season. On offense the team was led by Sean Allen, who dropped in 15 points and snared seven rebounds. But more impressively, the Thunderbirds shot 48 percent from the field as a team in the first half. O n defense, the tandem of Andy W ard and Reggie Lady cagers lose two on the road BY MICHELLE CLEGG Of che Thunderbird Scaff The Lady Thunderbirds fought ha rd on the road this weekend but couldn't come up with a victory. Losing back-toback games to Idaho and Eastern Washingron, SUU broke what could have been its longest winning string of the season. The losses bring th ei r record to 14-10 overall. Friday's game at Idaho got off to a bad start, Idaho leading by 19 at the half. The Lady 'Birds never made up the deficit and lost 79-56. The main problem seemed to be the low shooting percentages. Myndee Larsen only made eight of 15 of her field goals, Cherri Shurtliff, another starter, only made seven of 14. Although fie ld goal percentages were low, the free throw shooting kept them alive. Larsen made two of two, as did many other Lady 'Birds. Larsen was the high scorer of the game with 18 points. The only other 'Bird in double figures was Shurtliff with 14. Saturday's game at Eastern Washington was mirror image of Friday's game. The Lady Thunderbirds were again behind by 19 at the half. Once again, low shooting percentages were the key to the loss. Shurtliff, the high scorer, made only 7 of 11 from the field. Larsen made just two of 8. Shurtliff was the o nly 'Bird in double figures. Field goal percentage fo r the team was a mere 33 percent overall. The Thunderbirds never had a chance and ended up losing 69-44. The ' Birds have a chance to bring their record back u p with two consecutive home games including Tuesday night's matchup against UN LV. UNLV should also be a good game with the Lady Rebels a strong contender fo r the Big West Conference championship. Ingram shut down the Kangaroos' leading scorer Tony Dumas, holding him to nine points. O n the shoulders of this strong defensive play the ' Birds entered the locker room ahead 35-34. ln the second half, the Thunderbirds were plagued by fou l trouble. Keith Berard picked up his fourth hack early and was a non factor. Kansas C ity went to the charity stripe 23 times and made 2 1. This advantage allowed the 'Roos to erase an early second half lead and pull away late in the game, ultimately defeating the ' Birds 77-68. The Thunderbirds will continue thier roadtri p with a rematch against Cal-State Northridge Thursday night. In the first game played at the Centrum, SUU defeated the Matadoors by the score of 8 l-7 l. Gametime is at 7:30 pacific standard time. BIRDWATCH THUNDERBIRD BASEBALL: SU baseball ended up having a long weekend due to inclement weather and postponed a meeti ng between the 'Bi rds and the Cowboys of Wyoming. SUU GYMNASTICS: SUU's gymnastic squad picked up its first win of the new season last week with a 184.825 score in San Jose, Calif. The young team goes to Colorado Springs Friday to match up against the Air Force Academy.
