He was the only man who signed all four of the key documents in American history: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance, the Treaty of Peace with Great Britian, and the Constitution of the United States. Not being too fond of soap and candle business, like his father, Ben found printing more to his liking, and apprenticed with his older brother, to become a skilled printer. He wrote several newspaper articles. From 1723 to 1730, he worked for various printers in Philadelphia and in London, England, where he was sent to buy printing presses. THE GRAND OLE OPRY is every country artists dream and JEAN SHEPHARD realized her lifes ambition with many stints on the Opry scene. After the loss of her husband, HAWKSHAW HAWKINS, Jeanie knew that he would want her to continue. Talents developedby studio handful of dedicated musicians are established in Roy, wanting to develop the creative talents of local residents. Stayner Music Studios has been giving music lessons in Roy since November 1979. However, now the studio is introducing drum and guitar lessons, besides accordian instruction. Mr. Stayner, organizer of the Accordian Symphony, teaches accordian in Roy on Wednesday and Saturday. In the meantime Lester Skaggs provides drum instruction, and Steve Nyce and Troy BJacker teach jazz, classical and electrical guitar. Joan Skidmore fills in for Mr. Staynor, giving accordian lessons. A Lester Skaggs played drums for Count Basie and Walker in California in a great many concerts. He has been a drummer for 40 years. Walker died in 1975, when Walker died, Skaggs decided to move to Utah. The music Skaggs teaches is the kind that can push a band. Most drummers just play for themselves. His style is the kind that can push a band, he says. In his opinion, the first thing a beginner should know is music notation, then he or she can sit down at a set of drums. Joan Skidmore, a student of Weber State College, has played with the Ogden Symphony Accordian Orchestra for four years. Miss Skidmore is studying fashion merchandising. She discovered Dick Staynor in 1976, when he was in high school. It took a year of lessons from her to help her catch up with what she had missed from other teachers. Now she is giving lessons herself. Mr. Stayner is proud of the Accordian Symphony,, since it has always placed in the top four of local and national competitions. It now has 60 members. He likes to give the kids the chance to travel, and to have fun on a national level. Since 1972, the symphony has played for thousands of people. And in 1976 they won the top national amateur division of symphonic accordian orchestras. Theres just something about playing before an audience that helps the students grow, Stayner said. Its a key to opportunity, and it gives a child an appreciation of music. It helps teach and gives them and it makes music and relationships between student and instructor more than just a music lesson once a week. Stayner has been in music since age 8, and started teaching the accordian at age 16. He graduated with a Business degree from Weber State College. While in college, he managed a music studio in Ogden. Then he bought Pias Ogden and Bountiful studios in 1976. He now has studios in Bountiful, Roy and Ogden, teaching a total of about 140 students, 40 of which are in the Roy area. Stayner has held off on trying teachers for other instruments, looking for the right quality and people who are interested in instilling a quality education in his music e, students. Until recently he has only taught accordian at his studios, but now he has found the right talent for drum and guitar. He wants to give a quality education program rather than sell instruments.
