Brookens headed for nation's capitol When asked how often a voice like the one Karen Brookens has comes along, Roy High instructor Sterling Youd be surMorns responded prised. Theyre all around us. But very few apply themselves like Karen I J ( & V If KAREN BROOKENS, talented singer at Roy High, heads to Washington D.C. in for the biggest competition she has confronted so far. mid-Marc- h outftata has. Brookens, a junior at Roy High will be headed for Washington D.C. in to compete on a national level in a Music Teachers Association Contest. After winning on both state and regional levels, Karen will be tested against some of the finest prep mid-Marc- h talent across the nation. The stiff competition has only refined her singing talent and boosted her hopes for another memorable year in high school state competition As a sophomore Karen posted superior ratings at the region festival, a first for a Roy High student. I would really like to go all three years with is in both region and state, she stated. But of course now she focuses her attention, time and talents to the upcoming national competition to be held March 14, 15 and 16th in the nation's capitol. Karen, who first was interested in music when her mother used to play records on the family stereo, never game thoughts shed someday be this far along. She still remembers the first time she sang in front of an audience, it was her own school in fact. With mother on the front row giving all the inspiration she could, the six year old made it through with flying colors. Bui mother hasn't been on the front row in her competition through MTNA With the help of her private instructor, Evelyn Harris, Karen has waded through some of the most advanced learning of music she would have never dreamed of. In Provo last November she was posted as the state's representative to the Western Division competition to be held in Albequerque, New Mexico. That didnt come however, until she had sung four songs, (one required), taken a vocal test and a stiff written test. The same kind of stiff competitive challenges went on in New Mexico. The written test had questions Id never heard of before, said Karen, who like the other students had to pass the test in order to compete further. She threaded her way by the test getting a 37 with 33 passing and after the remainder of the competition was posted the winner. Students from New Mexico. Arizora, California, Hawaii, and Nevada competed right beside her. Besides all this Karen recently entered another festival at Utah State in which she came out the top winner Her private instructor has said in the patl, Karen is one of the most dedicated students Ive ever worked with. Mr. Morris, who enjoys his second straight year with Karen at Roy High, stated, Karen is the kind of girl who never questions what she is told, she just goes and does it. When 12 years of age, Brookens signed up to take voice lessons from Wendy Turner who after a couple of years went back to school to continue her education. A few months went idle without an instructor until she began working with Mrs. Harris at Weber State. One and sometimes two hours a day are devoted to singing practice Perhaps all that time and dedication will push her closer to her goals of someday attending and college singing opera or on broadway. Stahle Publications, publishers of the Roy Sun Times and Clearfield Courier would like to extend a warm thank you to the communities of Roy, Clearfield, Sunset, Riverdale, Hooper and Syracuse for their acceptance of the voluntary-pasystem for route carriers Problems have risen since the system first got under way last October, but for the most part the feedback we have received from you is that the program is satisfying the purpose designed Monev received by the carriers is used for nothing but building the carrier program. Of the 75 cents collected per home each month, at least 15 cents to 30 cents goes directly to the carrier The rest of the funds are used to buy trophies for Carriers of the Month, cash awards for carriers, and also used to offset the cost the boys spent in the past to buy elastics and their carrying bag. The present carriers and their parents are elated for the most part, about the program. It has been a project which has taught youth the value of hard work, managing money and time In the near future, Clearfield route carriers will get together for a pizza party, a little something to build moral among the carriers Roy is planning a similar event. A bonus point systems has also been designed to help the carriers work toward collecting enough bonus points to purchase valuable prizes Again we appreciate your support and so do the carriers y Hews Briefs Last labels collected by Valley View ... that was no math problem, but the final count12,299, 12,300 down made by the Valley View Elementary School Student Council, as the members counted the last of the labels, and packed them for shipment to be redeemed.
