It is common among teenagers: some are too tall, some are too short or too fat, some clumsy and awkward . . . and they exaggerate the importance of their shortcomings because they are so anxious to appear well before persons whose opinions they value. More often than not, such misgivings are unfounded, but their effect is very real. For example, a scientist may know that he is the greatest man in his field, may have complete confidence in his ability to carry out the most complicated experiments, but he may shrink from presenting his discoveries to even a sympathetic and receptive audience. Stage fright, of course, is another expression of which may have many causes. Physical abnormalities, personality shortcomings, lack of education, or perhaps a poor choice of clothes or clashing color combinations . . . He was not only but he was overly sensitive, indecisive, with a low ego, fearing to invite disapproval by taking a definite stand on anything. Because of his fear of ridicule he would withdraw trom social contacts, and was very defensive. During writing classes he had worked diligently at changing his small ds and ts from a large balloon pattern to a small retraced stem. Lower loops were lacking on his small gs and ys indicating a lack of social interests and future planning. He has corrected this area of his writing pattern. His personal pronoun I was written very small. It is now the size is growing and he of his largest capital letter. is attempting small goals and completing them. Displaced energy is showing in the light and dark pencil pressure. Silent most of the time, he communicated when he felt like doing so. Then he enjoyed an argument or was vocal in his biased outbursts against people who were minorities in his opinion. The local police and sheriffs department was on his priority list. His father, an older man, was disliked and downgraded. His mother had been ill most of his life. Mood swings were continual. Being emotionally unstable with inner turmoil, feeling pessimistic, drinking and drugs just added to his problems. He kept himself clean, though his clothes were worn. The small retraced small es are showing secretiveness and feelings of guilt. The dipped indicate shallowness and a dont give a dam attitude. They also r, indicate a lack of poor endurance, little or no amibition ( though he could really work when he needed some spending money) forward drive was nil. A constant death wish added to his antagonism. He seemed to long for a firm foundation and an opportunity to change his home environment. Learning to write in a three zone pattern on a straight line was an aid in hand control. When he did well in his studies, he was complimented and praised for a job well e done. He had received few kind words in his and they were music to his ears. how to will-powe- study p 26 in a years later became drinkers while only 4 per cent of the drinkers became abstainers The Cottage Program an International the University of Utah are a sponsoring training program to begin on April l in response to research findings of Dr. Selden Bacon, director emeritus of the Tugers Center of Alcohol Studies in Brunswick, New Jersey, in his landmark college population study of drinkers and its relevance for programs to combat alcohol problems. Drinking behavior among college students was first studied in 1950 and restudied 26 years later in 1976. The study reveals several aspects of alcohol beverage use which are relevant to controlling problems. programs for The study showed a marked decrease in the quantity of alcohol consumed by the 1950 cohort in a particular sitting and a general increase in the frequency of drinking occasions. The students who were labeled as problem drinkers during 1950 showed a marked decrease in drinking behavior over the 25 year span. One of the most prevalent myths exploded by Dr. Bacons research was that severe or chronic drinking by parents, parents siblings, and grandparents has little Mikkelsen to resign as dean Dr. Robert S. Mikkelsen, dean of the Division of Humanities at Weber State College, has elected to resign his position as dean effective June 30 of this year, Dr. Dello G. Dayton, vice president for academic affairs, said today. e Dr. Mikkelsen will return to the classroom as a WSC in of and the literature language English professor department. He also plans to devote some of his time to creative and scholarly writing. He joined the WSC faculty in 1954, then left to teach at Palomar Community College in California from 1960 to 1965. He returned to the Weber State faculty in 1966. As a professor of English he has been a successful teacher anbd has had his work published widely in both scholarly and popular magazines. During the last several years, Dr. Mikkelsen has occupied academic positions of importance on the WSC campus. He served as president of the WSC Faculty Association and was also elected first chairman of the Faculty Senate. He was chairman of the English Department for three years and has acted as chairman of several significant college-wid- e faculty committees. When the School of Humanities at WSC was organized in 1974, Dr. Mikkelsen beesme its first dean. Dr. Dayton said he has served with distinction in his role as leader of the newly formed school. He has, Dr. Dayton said, demonstrated sound judgment, a sincere conduct for the college community, and a dedication to academic affairs during his tenure as dean. To effect an orderly transition of responsibilities the selection of Dr. Mikkelsens replacement will begin as soon as possible. Advertising, screening and selection of the new dean will be handled in accordance with established college policies. full-tim- We'll show you how to do it iL Write a letter to the editor Artistry at Work.
