The SSA transfers the information from the forms to A cooperative effort between the Internal Revenue Service and W-2- P the Social Security Administration, called Combined Annual Wage magnetic computer tape, and shares it with the IRS, according to Wise. Prior to Combined Annual Wage Reporting, the IRS received much of this on information paper documents, which are much more difficult and expensive to match, he added. He said it costs the IRS about $200 to Reporting, will allow the IRS to match nearly all wage and pension information documents against income reported on 1978 individual income tax returns, Roland V. Wise, Salt Lake District Director of IRS said. On January 1, 1979, em- ployers began filing annually process 100,000 documents furnished on magnetic media, while processing the same number of paper documents cost $26,000. Another IRS matching effort occurs around the first of every year when employers, banks, and stock companies send statements to taxpayers showing income such as wages, interest and dividends. At the same time, they are required by law to send the same information to the IRS, Wise stated. In 1977, more than 494 million information returns arrived at the ten IRS Service Centers, most of it was on magnetic computer tape, disks and diskettes--th- e rest were paper forms. One might ask what the IRS does with all this inthe Utah IRS formation, director suggested. The answer is they use it to match returns against the amounts taxpayers report on their income tax returns, as often as possible. The IRS uses document matching to determine whether taxpayers have properly reported income on their tax returns. Besides identifying taxpayers who have not filed a return, or who have not reported the income shown on the information return, the IRS says its program also identifies those overpaid taxes and are who have unaware that they are titled to refunds. en- HOME BUYER CLINIC Robert C.
