This devastating disease affects women four times as often as men, and can attack babies under one year old as well as Elderly people. Although it affects the hand and foot joints primarily, it can also cause disease in the lungs, skin, blood vessels, muscles, spleen and heart. The disease first gets its start when a persons body develops an inflammatory reaction to a foreign substance in their body a virus being the most likely culprit in this case, according to Dr. Boyer. This initial response is like the reaction your body has when its fighting off an infection. But in RA the inflammation doesnt stop, he says. The danger of this circumstance arises if it continues over a long period of time. Then the inflammation can actually destroy the patients joint leaving him with increasingly stiff, sore hands and feet. destruction widespread comes in over 100 different forms even though its usually simply called arthritis. The term arthritis means an inflammation of the joint and thats usually the first sign of trouble, says Dr. Richard S. Boyer, staff LDS Hospital rheumatologist. The Utah Chapter of the Arthritis estimates Foundation that currently 150.000 Utahns suffer from some form of arthritis. Over 21.000 of these victims are permanently disabled. Nationally the figures are even more ominous, with over 20 million Americans one in seven people or one in three families suffering from the disease. Common symptoms of RA include a swelling of the affected site followed by redness and inflammation. If you touched the diseased area, you could actually feel heat being emitted, he notes. Many people think their pain is simply that which normally comes with old age, he says. This more subtle disease is typically localized in the hip and knee joints. Even though we dont completely understand the causes of arthritis, our research scientists have in the past 10 years made significant improvements in the types of medications and surgical treatments we can offer these patients, says Dr. Boyer. Many of todays drugs are aspirin-lik- Voice com- pletely. Orthopedic surgeons can also now completely replace certain diseased joints such as the hip and knee. If their doctor does diagnose arthritis special medication can then be prescribed and an in- dividualized physical therapy program set up for the patient. The challenge in treating people with arthritis is to teach them how to work their muscles to keep them strong without causing too much stress to their joints, explains Marlin N. Other widely-hel- d misconceptions include the idea that damp weather causes arthritis or dry weather cures the disease. But the worst superstition held by many arthritis sufferers, Dr. Boyer says, is the idea that physicians cannot help the victim cope with his pain. That's just ridiculous. Most health care providers, as professionals in the business of insuring the quality of life and life itself, have resisted. They contend that costs are low, that few are gouging, and that health care in the U.S. is superior to anything, anywhere. Theoretically there is an answer to the debate. Let citizens receive the health care they can afford to purchase. If health care were an insignificant luxury that one could do without, this free market thinking would work very nicely. Often, however, proper health care is directly related to the quality of life, the length of life, and in some cases continued life. These values would be difficult for even the most calloused person to overlook in a sense. Few would be willing to let a loved one with most of life before them suffer crippling results or death because of cost. A case in point which has been highly publicized is the cancer surgery of the son of Sen. EdWhen the ward Kennedy bad news was received, Sen. Kennedy, one of the foremost advocates of National Health Insurance and inexpensive health care, brought surgeons from around the world to consult on his son's case. Americans pay an average of 10 cents on the dollar for the best health care in the world. Utahns pay an average of 8.4 cents for the best health care in the U.S. A 11 of this is wonderful until some expensive health care is required. The best answer to this dilemma remains proper health maintenance and preventative health care.
