Well the boat is really a hydroplane with an unlimited engine pushing it across the water at speeds in excess of 120 mph. Although the boat is approximately 30 feet long and 12 feet w ide, the rolls and alltson royce engines give it the capability of 200 miles an hour or more. At racing speeds the unlimited hydro is a water ItS McDonalds of Roys Re-Gra- raced racing craft and an aircraft. Only the trailing edges of the two pontoon-lik- e sponsons at either side of the boat and nd the bottom blade of the propeller come into contact with the water at full speed. These three points cover an area less than that of a man's hankerchief, thus the term Three Point Hydro. Engines Now just a word about the engines used in these hydros. They are powered by the same engines that powered the Lightnings, the 1 Mustangs and the Spitfires during World War II. Those used on the hydros, however, are modified with superchargers and special gearboxes. The wear and tear on these hydroplane engines is unbvelievable and when we remember that the fighter engines had to be overhauled every 300 to 400 hours this same engine must be completely disasembled and rebuilt when a singer hours running time has been accumulated on it under the hydroplane racing Approximately 20 unlimited hydroplanes will be participating in the Utah Thunderboat Regatta and among them will be boats sponsored by Atlas Van l.
