Show I t I . by Keith Duncan Coach Ted Smith has a poster in the basement of his home that reads, Shoot For The Stars. In the recent banquet that honored the Roy basketball team, Smith claimed that he and his 1978-7- 9 Royals had reached the stars, but the climb for further excellence was still for future per- formers. The 1978-7cage season for Roy to came an official end last High Wednesday evening at the Hillary House in Ogden. Both the team and 9 its closest followers gathered together for a season closing banquet. FRED FERNANDES Wednesdays banquet blended beautifully with the inspirational season that Roy High worked for. Each varsity performer was awarded an individual trophy for claiming the Region One championship. Soon afterwards, eight awards were presented to the outstanding performers during the 1978-7- 9 season. Besides the players being recognized, the Royalaries, spirit club, team statisticians, managers, scouts, team physician, and ad- ministration were all duely recognized. Rob Vanderwood was selected by the coaches as the Most Improved Player. Nate Herzog received the trophy for being the Mr. Hustle of the Roy and was both humerous and emotional. He mentioned that the team had three specific goals in mind before the beginning of the season. The first was to win the region championship, of which the Royals had already done twice in the two years previous. "The kids never gave up and that says it all, Smith was quoted as saying. Roy did claim its third consecutive region title. Goal number two was to beat Sky View twice during the season of which they did accomplish. I remember telling the players that Id run home after the bus if we beat them in Smith-fielWe did win, but lucky things worked out for me that I didn't have to make that run, said Smith. The final goal in mind was to reach the state finals. Memories of the past state tournament were fresh upon Smiths mind and he recalled again, the great feat the team had accomplished in battling East in the s of the state tournament. Over a period of four years, the Royals have compiled a total record mark in while posing a of region play. Coach Smith claimed that kind of record ranks with at least the d. team.
