To the islands northeast lies the majestic Cascade mountain National range Olympic Park rests southwest of the island, while the San Juan islands are north, providing an ideal setting for the adventurous tourist. This idyllic region however, also goes by another name. Navyman Donald Pence, 27, of Roy, and other men of the naval air stations Search and Rescue (SAR) team here call it SAR Country. It is an appropriate label for an area which covers from Canada to the southern boundary of King County, Wash., and the eastern side of the Cascade mountains out to the ocean. Lt. Pence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Pence of 5352 S. 2200 W., in Roy, is search and rescue officer, and one of 11 pilots for the unit. SAR is important on this base because we support the squadrons here," explained Pence, who earned his bachelor of science degree from Weber State College in 1973. Any time an aircraft goes down, it's important to those pilots that there ;s someone there to pick them up. We also go up and take care of hikers whove gotten lost, or people whove fallen while mountain climbing. Pence, a graduate of Roy'k High School, has also completed basic Navy flight training at Pensacola, Fla. He has also flown the l and Huey helicopters. I always wanted to be a pilot, he said. Each helo is trimmed in brilliant orange, an international rescue color used for its high visibility. A civilian crew of 15 men - all former military do most of the helo maintenance. Designed by Boeing Co , the Sea Knight can carry 25 passengers, 15 litters, or up to 6,000 pounds of cargo at 144 m p.h. One mechanic praised it as the best thing thats ever happened to SAR here. e The Sea Knight's power and tandem-roto- r design make it ideal for rescues in this mountainous region. The helo can make rescues up to 10,000 feet, and hydraulically-operateits hoist contains 200 feet of cable that can lift 600 pounds at the rate of 100 feet per minute.
