SUNSET FIFTH Ward CRAIG SHEFFIELD of Layton East 9th beat the Layton team Waid is out on a force at third base by Kelly Purser of Roy First Ward 16-- Roy LDS finals self alt Lake play Here's a switch. Roy has been accused of stacking a ' B team in the Wasatch Front Football League WFFL) lastyeai One of then ' it teams was supposedly stronger than the "A" team of the same age and weight This "B" team went After ten gruelling games of Explorer, multi region and softball at Sandridge undefeated for the season, and overwhelmed then opponents by as much as 54-Park, Roy 1st Ward is tied with Clinton 5th, and Roy 11th is making a comeback. Meanwhile the l'A team struggled through a medeocre season, getting stomped The 11th Warders lost a close one to Clinton in their opening game, but have since by the likes of Bountiful, Layton. Brigham City and others Directors Frank come on with big wins over Roy 16th and Sunset 5th Wards, to stay alive in the Tremea and Frank Winward are still embarrased atxiut the situation, and have losers bracket vowed it won't happen again Uner the charter of the WFFL, communities are permitted to organise 70 C Roy 1st is riding high at the expense of Layton East 9th Ward and Sunset 5th. They are scheduled to meet Clinton 5th Ward tonight at Sandridge for the title football teams for first-yea- r boys whose v eight doe-- , not exceed To pounds for their of their own After losing to Roy in first game These teams are for 8 and 9 year olds only After than first year, boys Layton East 9th Ward made a come-bactheir opener, they did away with Mountain Green and Layton 11th to get back into between the ages of 8 and 10 are assigned to A" and ' B teams, if their weight is the thick of the tournament. The Layton East team will do battle tonight with Roy still 70 pounds or less The charter stipulates that the more talented boys should 11th Ward The winner of this cruical contest w ill challenge the loser of Thursdays play on the "A" team, and the slow developers or less talented should play on the Chnton-Rotournament "B" team This same format carries through foi 85 too and 12() according to their game for second place and a possible trip to the in Salt Lake City. At last word, a second team from this tournament may be perage mitted into the LDS finals in Salt Lake In Layton, Bountiful, Brigham City and other communities they have had tryouts to determine boys for A or B teams Clearfield has struggled to fill rosters k y ftWtl.M All-Are- a ( for just one team in each weight division, and hasn't had to worry about forming "B teams Roy, last year, had two A teams and one 'B team in the 70 and 85 pound classes and an 'A' and "B" team in the 100 and 120 pound classes Is it considered "STACKING" when a city puts its strong players on the "A" team, and the "Left overs" on the B roster" "Not so, says the WFFL, "but it is stacking when a community has two "A' teams, and all of the strength is shifted to one team " This situation frequently happens in the WFFL, and the League Fathers keep an eye out for offenders It is sometimes hard to explain, when one "A" team wins all of its games, and the other "A" team loses every time ( lty Directors, in Roy have gone t to keep balance in their football program There are no tryouts They usually line up the first year boys, and divide them into the 70-- ball teams After the first year, thev carry the same basic groups, but designate one of the group as a "B" team a few of the (letter athletes are steered to the one or tow "A" squades, and some of the slow-deelopers and less talented are sent down to the "B" team All of the team juggling is done in the first and second week of practice More often than not, some of the best players end up on the "B" squad Last year an ambitious "B" coach fattened his team with some super players that should have been playing "A" ball The "A" squad paid the price with a losing season It created a few waves in the WFFL The purpose of the WFFL program is to provide boys an opportunity to play football and to teach them fundamentals Teams are divided to create balance between league members In the early years of the league, all teams were considered equal, but they found out that the large population centers were winning most of the pennants Last year they broke the teams into four div isions, according to population, but that didnt solve too many problems This year, they have only two divisions, and already it shows promise of equality The WFFL boundaries go from Bountiful on the South to Preston. Idaho on the North, and it is growing In an effort to creat equality m teams, the WFFL has set up weight and age B or C if he weighs more than 70 pounds (75 standards No one can play in 70-after the first garnet and, or is older than ten years of age, (or over 9 for 70 C The age limit for the 85 pound teams is 11, for 100, it is 12, and the limit for the 120 pound class is 13 It looks good on paper, but what about the youngster who has the misfortune of being too big or too small for these standards' Some boys reach 70 pound in their seventh year, and others are still in their 6()-- s ior less at eleven all-ou- v years In past years, the large seven year old has been permitted to enroll one year early to allow him to play with an inexperienced team A new ruling, effective this year, prohibits any one who isnt eight before September first, from playing WFFL football Efforts to ammend the rules, and allow a September eight year old. or an seven year old to play one year early, have been presented to the over-weig- FFL by Roy Director Frank Tremea and others Perhaps they should change the date to November 1 The Ute Conference of Salt Lake City, allows larger boys to play on teams of their own providing they play only in the line. They also allow smaller boys to play an extra year in a particular age group, providing, again, that they play strictly as a linesman These concessions have been discussed by WFFL officials, but no word yet, on incorporating them into the league charter Its football time along the Wasatch Front, and hundreds of little super stars will be padding up for six or seven games of action Its a great sport for these youngsters, and they love it W cut-of- f age-grou- BEEF RUSTLERS Greatest Steal in History Ground Beef Dinner Special FAMILY RESTAURANT Wher there's something good lor everyone French Fries Onion Rings Toasted French Bread Crisp Lettuce Salad 5nEZQH2Z5Z2ZE 325 S.
