".1- - J' d When a controversial call is made in baseball, the fans are often left to their own details All they know is that imaginations, and never really know the nitty-grittand that makes them (the fans) hostile their coach, or their team is t, There was such a call made Saturday night in the Clearfield - Skyview game that flared into a real rhubarb 0 With Skyview leading and runners on second and third, Umpire Rick Stonehocker called Clearfield Pitcher Brent Rose for a balk Brent had been pitching from the wind-uposition, and at the urging of his coach, Ken Hicks, moved in front of the rubber to assume the stretch position But when he made the move, his foot was on the rubber, and the umpire ruled that he should have continued his movement toward delivering the ball That constitutes a balk But, claimed Clearfields side," the batter was not in the box, and that w'ould nulify the balk, rule But", countered the umpire, time had not been called out In the ensuing drama, Coach Hicks was ejected from the game, and was told to leave the park At the end of the inning, Coach Hicks appealed to the league Too Late, they said, shaking their collective directors, who were in the stands heads "The protest had to be made on the spot, not after play had resumed The umpires decision was final, and the game went on Clearfield lost the game I felt that several people erred m the controversy Brent Rose should have stepped backwards off the rubber to assume his new position in front He claimed that the batter was not in the box, and so he was allowed to move in any direction he pleased The umpire behind the plate should have called Time Out, if the batter indeed was not in the box He stated later that the batter was partly out of the batters box Coach Ken Hicks should have appealed to the league president at the time of the incident He waited until the inning was over, and that was too late The umpire ordered the coach to leave the field, and the ball park Coach Hicks went up into the stands, and then returned to the field of play to sit with his team Field Umpire Rick Stonehocker told this writer that he discussed the problem at the Umpire Association meeting, held Sunday in with some of the Ogden According to Stonehocker, they endorsed his call He maintained that even if the batter was not completely in the box, the pitcher was on the mound, ready to pitch the ball, and time had not been called out. Coach Hicks insisted that a pitcher cannot deliver the ball when the batter is not in the box, even if time has not been called out Its too bad that Coach Hicks did not make an appropnate protest. Then we could get an official ruling on the call. The ugly side of the incident was when the fans got involved in the controversy Some of the insults that were hurled at both the umpire and Coach Hicks should not have been said. It was a critical call, but not that crucial. Clearfield was down by three runs, and Skyview was playing good baseball I seriously doubt that Clearfield could have come back to win the ball game, but on the other hand, they are an explosive team, and have some big timber in their line-u- p Its awfully easy for us on the sidelines to look down our righteous noses, and condemn players and coaches and umpires, who make mistakes, and lose their cool on the field Give each of us a little time, and the right situation and well come unglued, as we have seen done on the field of competitive athletics DONT There is a saying from a wise old Indian that goes something like thisJUDGE A MAN UNTIL YOU HAVE WALKED IN HIS MOCCASINS (Cleats) FOR ONE MILE. y 3-- p 2 old-time- - p Skyview, the team that struggled to even get into the tournament is the Cinderella team, with big wins over Clearfield and Bonneville Bott fought an up hill battle to get over Roy No , but then shut out powerful Box Elder to move into the driver's seat tor the tournament Clearfield didnt look good in losing to Skyview on opening day, but came back strong against their sister-team- . Sunset to get back into the thick of it Roy No 2 was another team that nobody even expected in the tournament, but they proved us all wrong by beating League-LeadinClearfield in the final game of the season Then after that fiasco with Box Elder, they massacred their brothers from Roy No 1, and if pitching holds up could go further On Tuesday of this week, Bott was scheduled to meet Skyview in the battle of the unbeatens The victor here will not play on Wednesday, but will go to Thursday to wait for a showdown with the team that survives in the losers bracket By Tuesday night, there will be one undefeated team, and four clubs. The latter four w ill be reduced to two on Wednesday, and those twO teams will play again in one hour for the honor of meeting the one undefeated team of the whole tournament, on Thursday There is a on chance of another double-heade- r Thursday.
