He was unable to loosen up sufficiently for the and ran a disappointing 11.6. He was physically and mentally drained as he entered the race, but was able to muster the strength to finish, and hold the lead he had built up in the other events. He finished 300 points ahead of Lane Maestretti of Nevada. It was the pressure of Maestretti that inspired Jeff in doing so well. Seven of his ten marks and times reached beyond his best-eve- r record. He made jumps of 68 and 6T0V on his first tries in the high jump after Maestretti had failed at 65. Jeff believes it was in the high jump, hurdles and javelin that he overcame the Nevadan. Jeff began training for the Decathlon during the winter of 1975-7- 6 at the urging of Bonneville coaches Gary Van Velson and Neville Peterman, who stayed with him all the way to his victory. He worked hard for two years, but the big pay day was Saturday as he mounted the turnstile to claim the most coveted trophy of the whole track meet. Jeff is 61 tall, weighs 165 pounds. He is 18 years old and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Saxton of Washington Terrace. He has three sisters, but none of his family was able to see him compete. His sisters live in Seattle, Germany and Hawaii. His parents were attending an art show in Lubbock, Texas on the days of the big contest. His father is an accomplished artist. They called Jeff Sunday morning and he gave them the glad word. What are his plans? Right now I am only thinking about helping to win the Region One track championship, he quipped. Later, I hope our team can do well instate competition, but thats a couple of weeks away. Are the college coaches knocking on your door, or writing to you? we asked. Not yet, he smiled. I hope to get some good offers, but that wont come until after the season ends. On the strength of that 6T0'4 high jump mark alone, Jeff will be hearing from some big schools. His Decathlon scores will be filed in many coaches offices through the USA. Hell be a marked man, when the heavy recruiting begins All of Northern Utah is proud of you, Jeff Swanger, Champion 1977. r, 1500-met- -- events outstanding 400-met- er Hansen The Explorer Olympics for the Southern District, Boy Scouts of America held three At the BYU High School Invitational, the Decathlon was billed as the Big Challenge. The 64th annual track and field meet drew athletes from Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and from virtually all high schools throughout Utah. Some athletes competed in as many as three and four events. That is a good work out but one group had come one day early to compete in the ten events of the Decathlon. On Friday they opened with the dash, participated in the long jump, shot put, high jump and ran the race. On Saturday they competed in the hurdles, the discus, pole vault, javelin and finished with the run Some 34 contestants started the gruelling two day contest, but only 14 finished. Winner of the coveted first place trophy was Jeff Swanger of Bonneville High School. Swanger competed last year, and finished in third place, with 6,296 points. He broke the decathlon record last Saturday with 7,001 big points. We compared his 1976 and 1977 results. EVENT 76 MARKS 77 MARKS 1500-met- Lon last ' Saturday, April 30.
