Southern Division's Venturer and k Explorer basketball tournament of last week Teams representing 11 stakes of the communities in and around Roy, Clearfield, Lav ton and Kaysville participated in the two 16 team tournaments A Venturer team, under the banner of the Roy First Ward won in that division, and the Roy 14th Ward Explorers emerged as victors in the senior div lsion Roy first beat a good Lav ton First Ward team in the junior division Roy 14th edged the Kanesville First for the senior division crown Ward This was not an extension of the LDS Church tournaments, recently played throughout the area, and in Salt Lake City The scouting program is for every boy in the various age groups, regardless of his religious affiliation In Utah, 98 percent of the scout troops are sponsored by the LDS Church, but open to boys of all faiths The many teams went by ward boundaries for the LDS members who played, but each ward could register nonmembers of Venturer and Explorer age for their respective teams Unlike the church tournaments, previously played, this program was open for athletes who may have played on high school, and junior high school teams, nd even those who played college ball The final game in the senior bracket featured several Roy High School team embers against several Roy High School team members Laytons heralded Ben Bubok played on a Layton John Gilbert and team-mat- e Ward Team Royee Eves, Scott Balaich and Steve Nabors of Clearfield High School, played on a team from Sunset Mark Miller, one of Roys big inside men played on his Ninth Ward team If Miller had not been a member of the LDS Church, he would have been able to play with any team in the Roy area Roy 14th reached outside its ward boundaries for four of its team embers, who just happened to be good basketball players Under the rules of the program, this type of recruiting is legal In the larger metropolitan areas of the country, the same thing is being done, only on a much larger scale scout group is conThe rules committee of the Utah-base- d ward teams to would rule that a restrict templating initiating just two athletes, who do not live within the ward boundary That rule would tend to limit the strength of local teams, but it would also hamper the representative teams from Utah in national tournaments Another rule change being conr teams to go into sidered, has to do with forming national competition We must remember that his is a scout league It is not a church league It is not a high school or college league Each area is invited to come up with a Venturer and Explorer team of the best athletes available, and work up into natnonal competition The nationals are held every other year Next year the winning teams from this part of the country will compete in Colorado against teams from all across America. We must come up with an equitable plan to get young men of scouting age involved, and to be competitive when we meet other teams throughout the country A Venturer team from Roy went to the national finals last year in Las Vegas, Nevada One of the teams they competed s involving some 32 against, was organized after Still another team New York schools in City junior high featured the pride of all Las Vegas, with two Los Angeles stars thrown m for good luck Maybe we Utahns arent out of order in resorting to the all star system, after all This is a great program, but like all organizations from Little League to the pros, there are problems The nice thing about the scouts program is the w ay it invol ves young men in sports Hats off to the whole scouting program (1 ot Big pi esented to the Boai Game Control in June and will he used to determine the tv pe and season length foi the 1977 Big Game seasons Those individuals wishing to join the rides should plan on meeting at Chris' Cafe ai ea at 9 a m of April 29 and again on April 30 The 29th (ovei the mouusteiv hollow area and the loth rule will be on the Skintoe aiea alien e and East of Causey Res Both rules will he conducted on horseback Conservation officer Jerr Dahlberg will be in (barge of both range rides in Weber rule try-out- rppmtm IRRIGRTIOfl 1 t v 111 sennit Division Four linalists out of eleven who er.teied the competition h 8), wei e 11th Maik Thayne, Post 316, i ac use ii d W ard Neal Wavment - Post 315, West Point 2nd Brent Stoddard, Post 49, Rov 3rd Ward stove Gardner - Post 190, ( leal Held 6th Ward Ihev will plav off Sv 40 Sunst 5th 5i t Rov 1st i.9 Semoi Division Kanesville 1st t.S, Lavton 5th Rov 14th Sv i acilse 2nd 5 linals il 2 ii d pi Wed-nesda- Rov and .3rd place weeks Explorer Tms schedule Olvmpic Saturday - April 30th Safe Driving Road Rally: Kavsville East Stake Center, 8 a m (Senior Division only) Contact Neal Smith, or Keith Carter, 376 8184 for 1st 57 Division t5 Rov 14th Exploveie Olv mpic 1st week 376-226- ate as follows more Golf Tournament allev View Goll Course, Lavton Junior Division 1st Place McKissick, Tie Doug Post 189, Clearfield 5th Waid Todd Wan Brocklin Post 455, Kav sv die 3id Waid, Arthur Bowman Post 455, Kavsv die 3rd Ward 2nd Place Tie - Larry Reid Post 306 Dale Kruitbash, Post 315, Mark Ried, Post 306, Troy Nye, Post 317 3rd Place Tie - Kevin Fisher, Post 315, Bobby Sant, Each information Explorer must bring a signed parent permission slip with him to the road rally iihery; Layton High School. 2 p n to 4 p m Contact Don W llson, for more information Wresting: Sunset Junior 773-321- 9 High School - Weigh-i- n must call Rent Galbraith, or Elvin Morrill, beofe Saturday, April 30 if they want to enter the wrestling tournament 773-779- 3 773-342- 2 I'm Reddy Kilowatt, your friend at Utah Power. To avoid wasting electric energy, match the pan. size to the size the surface unit. Also, a pressure cooker requires less time and electricity to cook many foods Small kitchen appliances can mean an energy savings in preparing small quantities of food Toasters, waffle bakers, electric and grills skillets usually require less energy than a range when used correctly Example toasting bread in an oven requires three times as much toaster. electricity as in a pop-u- p Instead of frequent "peeking, " use a timer to check oven temperatures Each time you open the oven door, the temperature drops 25 to 50 degrees Another way to save in cooking countertop microwave ovens can mean an energy savings of 25 to 75 percent over conventional oven cooking Saving on refrigeration Can save on electricity used tor refrigeration? Refrigerators and freezers run more efficiently when well filled When half empty, they use more energy, because air is harder to keep cold than chilled foods and liquids but Q. I A. foods should be placed slightly apart on refrigerator shelves for proper air circulation Cover liquids in frost-fre- e units, because moisture is drawn away from uncovered liquids, which makes the refrigerator work harder Defrost conventional refrigerators at least twice a month and freezers at least annually. A frost buildup of more than 14 inch maxes tne cooling unit work harder. . ramp & LIGHT COMPANY 9 75, 85, 95, 105, 115, 125, 135, 145, 155, 165, 175 annd unlimited All Explorers or advisors Hi, How at am Weight categories, Lets get a bit more light on the fife subject! a v April 27 for 1st, 2nd answered.
