ONIONS r-- Large California ?,23 RADISHES fresh April is bringing more than pleasant days salad items are starting to come to market in abundance We may not see the very low prices of a year ago but compared to winter highs and some shortages the new lower prices now beginning, are a welcome relief and will continue Even when produce is up in price its high food value often tops that of some less nutritional, more expensive choices that we might make without question at the market place In answer to many customers who often ask us the source of produce at Smith s California continues to supply most o' our garden needs at present with some additions from Texas, Arizona, the Northwest and Florida (when there isn t a freeze ) Our own local asparagus crop is due anytime now. and we look forward to a number of other vegetables from local gardens as the season progresses, to supplement our supply YoullnoticethisweekendatSmithsthat Iceb' g lettuce can once again take its rightful place as e mam ingredient of most salads along with radishes, green onions and regular cucumbers. Carrots, celery and cabbage are also down from their winter high Avocados remain in good supply after a plentiful and high quality winter. Perhaps you ve noticed from time to time the long narrow cucumber in the thin plastic wrap. This is the European variety and at Smith's we bring this type cucumber in mostly from hot houses in Arizona and Utah where it s chemically grown in soil Many of our customers are enjoyinq the tender edible skin lack of seeds a ndmild flavor of this variety If you have any questions abour produce ask our produce managers or call my office on the red phone.
