Show SUN CHRONICLE, Oct. 7, 1976, Page 13 On che IISS With Coach Sark Arslanian of Colorado e State is known for his brand of football, and he usually comes up with something new to those who think they have him figured out. At BYU a few weeks ago, his Rams had just scored a T.D. against the Cougars and were lining up for the PAT. The center was over the ball, the kicker and holder were in position, and the rest of the team was in an innocent-lookin- g huddle on the left side of the ball. Six of them just happened to be positioned at the team to Kick it out of there. The center then snapped the ball, short, to a blocking back, who just happened to be their runner, and he carried it for a 24 yard gain. The play was so deceptive that even the cameraman missed razzle-dazzl- I and bread-and-butt- the play. They showed what happened on instant replay from a backup camera located in the end zone. Keeping their drive alive led to an eventual touchdown for the daring Bruin team. Some years ago, Wyoming University scored against a Utah team on a trick play. They threw a pass into the flat to a receiver, who just happened to be standing behind the passer so it was actually a lateral, but only Wyoming knew that. The wide receiver displayed great disgust for having dropped such an easy pass, and casually picked up the ball and rifled it downfield to another receiver who was standing free in the end zone. were standing very still. BYU, meanwhile was earnestly discussing strategy in their defensive huddle. Suddenly the ball was snapped and the kicker trotted behind the wall of Ram players into the end zone for two points. R was legal. Seven men were and they on the had all set for the required time before the snap of the ball. Ernie Jacklin of Roy High School tried the same strategy on Bonneville Friday, and it almost worked, but a couple of Laker coaches had seen the State game and alerted the defense in time. Nice try, Coach. The big showdown between last Six points for Wyoming. In Rock Springs, Wyoming, a few weeks ago, a high school team had scored and had lined up for the kick for the extra point. Two men had gone to the same blocking assignment near the right end, and the quarterback called for one of them to get on the other side where he belonged. He followed directions by going in motion, as his teammates set and the defense dozed. Just as he got behind the center, the ball was snapped to him, and the offensive guard and tackle exploded into the sleepy defenders to pave the way for conversion. the The trickiest of the trick plays game in happened in a BYU-AS- BYU-Colora- NORTHERN UTAH'S GOOSE POPULATION FOR THE Oct. 9 opening is estimated to be between ting success is expected to be good. 8,000-9,00- 0 geese. The'number of Canadian geese in Northern Utah right now is estimated between 8,000 and 9,000. The one week delay between the duck opener and goose opening is credited with reducing the kill of local birds and has resulted in building the flock of Canada geese for the last few years. Utah is in the intermountain flyway of the larger pacific flyway which had been aiming for a wintering flock of 50,000 geese. Last year, approximately 53,000 geese were wintering in Southern California and the Gulf of years Mexico. Spriftg production of Canadian geese in Northern Utah for 1976 was excellent. The UCLA coach pulled one that fooled the whole nation, and especially the Buckeye defense. The Bruins of UCLA were trailing 7 to 3 and had the ball with 4th down and inches to go on their own 26 yard line. The UCLA fans began a chant of and the offensive team begged their coach to let them go for it. The Coach waved them off with much displeasure and sent in the kicking Schiede, lined up to go for short yardage on fourth down, as the Sun Devils tensed for action. Then Schiede went in motion from his quarterback position (which is legal) and the defensive linemen charged after him. The ensuing five yard penalty was all they needed for first and ten.
