Show Page 14 Thursday, April 8, 1976 Sun Chronicle Roy coeds excell, defend Region One title High performances b Keith Duncan There were happy moments in the Roy High gymnasium last Thursday afternoon, as the Royal coed gymnastics squad performed like they had never done before to capture their second consecutive Region One gymnastics championship. As Dean Oborn, the meet's official scorer, began to read the results of the meet to the gathering, intense moments followed. As it became evident that Roy was the champion, the Roy team became a bubbling bunch of enthusiastic happy performers. l!oy had amassed 24) .58 points while Bonneville was posting a final score of 250.83. Box Elder grabbed third with 229.07 points, Weber fourth with 212.83 points and Bear River was fifth with 46.87. Coach Jan Parrish says that the 241 points was the most that any Roy High team had accumulated in one meet. Everything pointed upward and the situation was especially inviting since Cindy Allen of Roy was named the meet's outstanding gymnastic This Saturday Roy High travels to Bingham to in their last battle of the year, ;the state meet. Coach Parrish was elated over the victory and said, It was the neatest feeling the morning before the meet. We all met at the gym at 7:00 and listened to Bob Richards trom a record. It was really inspiring. The kids went through the rest of the day doing better than they had ever done before. It was more rewarding than anything else to see them excell like that. Everyone in the school congratulated them after their big win. These girls put in over 300 hours of work apiece this season ;to get where they are today. I really thought it was going to be closer tl .it it was. Just seeing the kids jump up and scream for joy after finding out they v 're the champions sent chills up my spine. All lb.. excitement seems to make all those 300 hours well worth the while. The kids here at Roy have super attitudes. Other coaches in the region were saying that they would be glad when it was all over, but I never felt that way. This is just where I want my team to be. on top Individual Results In glancing over the Region One meet results, lirst at the Class 3 results, Roy was fortunate to get several valuable places. Maureen Myren, senior, placed third in the Class 3 Bars. Heidi Hunter, sophomore, took third in the Class 3 vaulting event. Heidi Hunter also took a fourth in the Class 3 beam. She tied for sixth in the Class 3 floor. To make it all worth while,. she placed second in the Class 3 rankings. Cindy Allen placed first in the Class 2 bars, floor and was the Class 2 gymnast for the second straight season. Camille Myer, sophomore, placed third in the Class 2 bars, third in the vault, lourtli in the floor and was fourth in the balloting for the gymnast in Class 2. Kathy Tracy, senior, was second in Class 2 vaulting. Cindy Allen was fourth in the vault and Neesha Roberts a sixth to give Rby a near clean sweep in this event. Roys phenomenal gymnast whiz Cindy Allen really put on a show in optional routines, taking a first place on the bars, vault and floor and placing sixth on the beam. For all this she was undoubtedly named the optional gymnast. Camille Myer placed high in optionals, getting a sixth in bars, third on the beam, fourth in floor exercises and being named the third all around optional gymnast. Gymnastics is a sport that is misconceiving by just glancing at the score sheet. It takes tremendous depth to win titles and several names never show up in the live or six. Several of those performers were Arlene Stevens, senior, who took third in state in vaulting as a sophomore. Juniors, Kayleen Scott, Debbie Baird, sophomores, Sherrie Cunnington, Christensen and Jolynne Friedli. State Meet on Saturday at Bingham What are Roy's chances in state this Saturday? The importance oi Rockwood's efforts and the foresight of Brigham Young, however, set a precedence lor the states resources. That precedence is carried on today in the Utah Division of Wildlile Resources ot the 976 Region One gymnastic champions shown with their principal Darrell 230 to settle for second place. HERE ARE 1 K. White and coach Jan Parrish. the young gymnast to find another pasttime, something less dangerous. Well, Cindy sat out for a year which is probably the second most unbelievable happening on her trail to stardom with the Royals. Starting so late is one thing, but sitting out a year with an injury is even more eye awakening. She did come though and just before her junior year began, the question was not w hether she w as good, but w hether she was too good for Roy High and suitable in a private school with lessons. Cindy made the.choice that is quite obvious today, even though she has had outside help at times. Recently, Coach Jan Parrish, the Roy High coach, commented that her team members put in at least 300 hours a piece in preparation for the region and state meets. Cindy is not shy to admit though, that she puts in twice this many hours to make her attempt at a comeback before her junior season. In her junior season, she took top honors at the Region One meet and helped team to a victory over Weber in the region meet. Cindy commented on Mr. Dennison's contributions to her success, Hes been super. A really neat guy. He has taken me in as part ot the team and made me feel at home, lie has to be the biggest reason tor all my success. Last summer we went to California and visited Lake Tahoe tor a week with other gymnasts." Asked w hy she enjoys gymnastics so much, she replied. "Just enjoy the nea leeling ot making someone else happy. I enjoy to thrill people with my routines, hut it sure works up an appetite. Winning the 1976 title was fascinating and I hope this team can do it next season. Everybodys scores count." Cindy's most thrilling gymnastic experience came when she won her first ribbon in the WAA meet in ninth grade. "It was exciting to win something Once you do well, you want to continue. That's where it all started," said Cindv Cindy is always helping younger girls get a head start and one she really admires is Reckv Hamblin of Roy who amassed 241 points while Bonneville gained Laker results Allen: true champion by Keith Duncan Chronicle Sports Editor The story behind Cindy Allen's quest and final capturing of the Region One All Around gymnast title is somewhat unbelievable and even more incredible. Cindy is a senior at Roy High School here in 1976 and just last Thursday she claimed her second straight gymnastic title in both Class 2 and Optional routines in helping her team to a second consecutive Region One team title. Most girls having achieved the honors that Cindy has, start gymnastics at very early ages. Cindy was never introduced to the sport until the summer before her seventh grade year and even though this is an early age, consider some girls starting at when they are 5 and 6 years old. By this token, you can come to the conclusion that it took a lot of make up time and some steady determination on her part. In that summer before her seventh grade school year, she was offered a free lesson to Scott Pitcher's tumbling and acrobatics class. Cindy attended the class with Kellie Anderson, a 1975 Roy gymnast graduate. Together they learned numerous acrobatic skills and when Cindy arrived home the first night, she was excited and something told her deep down inside that this was going to be a pleasureable hobby. She stayed w ith the class through her ninth grade year and captured first place in the novice intermediate floor exercise in a meet sponsored by the WAA i Wasatch Amateur Acrobatics). to meet the person that was Cindy would play the biggest part in her future career in gymnastics, just as her sophomore season at Roy High was beginning. Mike Dennison, now a professional tumbling instructor at the Roy Recreation Complex and coach of the Woods Cross TAGS team, met Cindy in October ot her sophomore year. Immediately the two went to work and the skills that Cindy picked up in the next months were invaluable. Tragedy struck on Dec. though, as Cindy fell from the balance beam and dislocatred her elbow The extent of the injury was serious and doctors advised Roy For .the second consecutive season, the Bonneville High School girls gymnastic squad finished second behind the Roy Royals in the battle for the Region One gymnastics championship. The Lakers finished with a very remarkable 230.83 team points while Roy amassed 241.58. Under the direction and coaching of Pauline Souter, the Lakers are to be complimented for a very fine season. Bonneville did place 25 girls in the is now in the seventh grade. Becky is presently a member of Mr. Dennisons team. She feels that the sport of gymnastics is growing with leaps and bounds. When I first started in gymnastics, people would wonder what you were talking about when you asked them if they were coming to the meet. Now nearly everyone in the school is interested. Its a really good feeling to know that they care enough about it, said Cindy. At present, Cindy has received good scholarship offers from Utah, Utah State, and should get an offer from BYU when the state meet is complete. She is looking forward to participating in the college level. Her parents, who have always been backing in every way, would like nothing more than to have Cindy compete in the college meet, more than any school could put together. The results are listed below for individual Bonneville did place 25 girls in the meet, more than any school could put together. The results are listed below for individual Bonneville competitors. In the upcoming state meet, Cindys chances for the Gymnast title are brighter than what was expected three or four months earlier. I think we can do it. If we worked like we did in region we can win. Brighton is great, but Roy is the greatest. It would have to take a superb effort on my part to take the all around title. If you cant hit it one day, there is always someone else to take your place. Coach Prarish has done everything tor us. Shes dedicated and decided to take a judging class so she could learn more about the sport. Coach Jan Parrish had this to say about Cindy, Never once have I heard a negative complaint from someone about Cindy. The rest of the kids want her to do well and she w ants them to do well also. Her meet with Bonneville this I year was the most fascinating thing have witnessed since meeting her at tirst. Shes always ready to go and if someone else makes a mistake or falls, she is the first one to their side to sooth them or wipe away the tears.
