Show Friday, March Sun Chronicle 10 Page 12, 1976 GMRGNI6LE STAMBIWGS TOURNAMENT ENTRIES NOTED Because of the Wednesday deadline for the Clearfield Courier and Sun Chronicle, we are unable to furnish the correct pairings for the state tournament that begins next Monday at the University of Utahs Special Events Center. But hold on sports fans, the pairings listed below could very well suit your needs, for they are almost correct, almost! The tournament gets underway on Monday and runs through to the championship on Saturday night. There will be no mythical state championship this season where the and champs meet each other. The tourney will include 16 teams and eight of those top teams will be recognized at the tournaments end. Region Three action is all complete, but West and Skyline must flip a coin to see who enters the tournament as a second or third place team behind Highland. Region Four enters their final week of play this week and no playoffs look formiable at this point except for Brighton and Hillcrest for third and fourth place. In Region Two, Layton and Clearfield are the and both receive trophies for their season, but the two battled it out last Tuesday to see who would enter the tournament as first and second place. Region One is the biggest mess of all. Four teams are tired division. Well now, they have put together an the wrestlers still includes that top wrestling squad from Bonneville, Clearfield and Roy. Each of these schools went up against each other during the course of the season, with Clearfield winning both matches. Roy got two wins over the Bonneville Lakers while the Lakers failed to pick up a win in a rebuilding year. Clearfield placed seven wrestlers on the squad, Roy had four, and Bonneville two The was Doug Higley, a unanimous choice Higley was the Box Elder and Weber tourney champ, region champion, state champion, and just recently stabbed the first place in the Federation Tournament. Rick Malmgren of Clearfield received the most votes for the best wrestler at 108 He was the Box Elder and the Region Two champion Dave Parr won out in the following weight over James Marshall of Clearfield and Jeff Phipp of Bonneville. Parr, a Roy grappler, was voted the top wrestler for his coaches in a recent banquet To win this award you had to show the most in determination, dedication, desire and discipline Parr was the first place winner in the 1975 Roval Tour nament. Kirk Cowdin, only a junior, was picked the top 122 pound wrestler over Kevin Brooks of Bonneville and Tim Kerr of Roy. Cow din took it on the chin for most Steve Keir was the top grappler for the bracket from Bonneville. But there were some other top choices for this division in Clearfields Steve Pena and Roys Chad Olsen. Keir was the champ in the Weber County and Ogden City league. Pena was the defending Region Two champ entering this season, but settled for a second place. 129-pou- all-sta- BASKETBALL STANDINGS City-Count- REGION LEADING SCORERS Five Roy 8th grade basketball teams will be involved in an Easter Seal Basketball Tournament, that is being staged at the Layton Armory in Layton All proceeds from this tournament go toward the Easter Seal society for crippled children and adults of Utah The Morgan City Lions Club just with Mount Ogden coming out the victor of that particular tourney. The Blue Lakers were coached by Esther Green and sponsored by Gran Murphey. They were big winners over Roys Arbys Bucks in the championship game, score. Tom Chour-nou- s winning by a was the top scorer for the Mt Ogden squad, hitting 18 points in the first half and ending the game with 33 points. Arbys Bucks were coached Hall who is presently the athletic director at Hill Air Force Base Burt Rich poured through 57 points in just three games for Coach Halls squad Taking third places was Box Elder. The Box Elder team also won the sport completed their tournament, 73-4- 9 y tourin the Olsen was the runner-u- p nament. Senior Dan McMillian grabbed top honors for the weight division. Dan was gutsy in claiming third place in Region Two and going a lot further in the state competition than anyone would have supposed. He was picked over Keith Lammert of Bonneville and a fine junior at Roy, Drew Parker. Clearfield placed a second and the only other junior on the squad in Dan Klecker at the weight. Dan was another Falcon wrestler who had to fill in from on and eventually placed third in the region meet. He was victorious over Gary woodcock of Bonneville and Mark Hadley of Roy. Cledrfields Dave Dalton helped his team to another top selection in the structure. Dave craved determination and gutted out a fourth place position among all the wrestlers in the state Dalton placed only third in Region Two but made a fine state showing. He was a winner over Jeff Hites of Bonneville and Kay Okey of Roy. In the bracket, it was probably the City-Coun- mid-seaso- n d d Easter Seal tourney draws area teams 1 4-- of the season until he bellied up in region and placed second, where no one thought he could. Sun all-are- -- Sophomore coach, Ernest Jacklin presented the outstanding sophomore award to Clint Farmer. The outstanding junior award was presented to Lynn Weston Coach Carter handed out several letter of merit to his wrestlers, but when it was Dennis LaMars turn, he stopped for a minute to congratulate him for a superb season. LaMar w'restled every weight from 155 to HW. Dave Parr award for the wrestler that showed received the the most in determination, desire, discipline and dedication. The most improved wrestler was Phillip Myer and the most outstanding wrestler for the entire season was, Scott Sanders. The wrestlers themselves voted upon this award. Scott Sanders presented the trophy and claimed it was the first time it had ever been done. wrestling squad named for area ar Remember back in the fall when the 4A Kevin Thompson and Scott Sanders. His name was Mark Brown, who had a 20-- 0 record and 18 of them pins. Thompson was never taken down through any match That is a remarkable feat and a record that will stand for years I suppose. have got one thing over the girls that other sports do not have. They cant wrestle and if they ever start, I want Coach Carter to notify me and Ill start right away. Another thing guys, I want you to know that I am the one that put wrestling on the map for Roy High. In all seriousness though, I played at a linebacking spot for Ogden High and was the best to come from that school for a long time. The one coach just happened to be the wrestling coach at the time and he asked me if I would like to wrestle. Once on the mats, I was going up against this junior who had me down in a flash. Wrestling is the toughest sport to get in shape for and everyone in the world should know that, if they already dont. Mr. Carter and his assistants care about you and are there to help yuou in anything that comes out. Trust them. Ive got a little boy now, that I hope will someday be wrestling for someone. Coach Carter stood to make the presentations saying, We made tremendous progress as far as Im concerned. I was elated over some of thq'eY-formances, especially at the region tournament. The Seniors had a fine year and now its up to the sophomores to keep smanship trophy. The Hooper team made up of Sand Ridge Junior High athletes, claimed fourth place in the tournament Harold Miller, John Staker, Floyd Wiednuei, Willard Cragen and Harry Hall will he the coaches for the annual tournament for fund raising in easter seals Two Bountiful teams, South Ogden, Washington Terrace, Sunset, Ogden, and two Layton teams will be the in the five-daremaining teams involved tournament. The schedule for the first round has Willard Cragans crew playing up on against the No. 2 Layton team Mondav March 15 at 5:30. Harry Halls team plays the Bountiful Bruins on the HaroId Mll!er's opening night at 6:40squad gams a bye in the first round. Fred Wiedmiers young team plays on Monday also at Layton at 9:00. Roys Bountiful Braves No 2 team plays the at Hill Air Force Base on Monday at 8 30 This team is coached by John Staker y toughest thing to pick a top man. All three schools sent outstanding candidates for this position, but Phil Myer of Roy and Scott Hunter of Bonneville finally got the top nod. Hunter had defeated Myer three straight limes before Myer finally defeated Scott for the Region One championship. Myer went into the state tournament and competed further than anyone else for the Roy team. The other wrestler in this bracket was Steve Baxter of Clearfield who was knocked from the state tournaments winning bracket by Myer, but earler in the season, Baxter defeated Myer in the Weber High School Invitational for the championship. Rovs Scott Sanders was the top pick in the weight He was picked over Robert Weihe of Bonneville and Kevin Schofield of Clearfield There were a few' positions on this team that werent very hard to pick and Scott's was one of them. He was the complete wrestler, compiling a total overall mark of 20 wins and 3 losses He placed first in the Region One tournament, the y tournament and the Weber County Invitational. Kevin Thompson of Roy, was another unanimous choice for a position on the first ever a team. Kevin was picked over Grant Ballingham of Bonneville and Girard Page of Clearfield. Kev was unstoppable during the seasons length, stockpiling an overall mark of 22 victories and 4 losses Thompson placed first in the Region One tournament, the Roval 75 tournament, and the y tournament He was a third place hero in the Weber tournament The heavyweight tag was taken by Clearfields Tim Cottrell Tim got the top billing over Mike losmark of Roy, as Bonneville was unable to place a man m the top weight Cottrell was probably one of the smallest big men in the state but then again was one of the smartest He won the majority of his matches by using his head, not his talent.
