Show Page Sun Chronicle 8 SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS Royals face test with strong Bears BY KEITH Dl'NCAN SPORTS EDITOR The Roy Royals haven't lost a single game to a league opponent in any of the major sports this scene did the season Only in the Royals drop a decision to another Region One team The grid squad only lost one game and that came to the hands of Bountiful The basketball team has yet to lose in the tough region race and either has the wrestling team But on Tuesday, the Royal cagers meet the Bear River Bears in probably the young season's most crucial game. The Bears are undefeated in league play and then again they didn't lose too many games in the preseason schedule either The game will decide the region leader and that team will probably go into the state tournament Its difficult to pin point the exact words for the Royals play thus far this season Theyve w on five straight games and will be eager for another one. The Bears finished fourth in the Region race last season and went to state for the first time in several years This season however, the Bears will be a sure bet to make the playoffs and do well in the tourney. They are returning all their starters from a year ago except one Bear River went through the season last year with a tournament, slate; and entered the State where they beat Ogden and dropped very close decisions to eventual state champions West High and Clearfield. The Bears finished the season with an overall record which is particularly impressive considering that their total enrollment figures were well below those of any of their opponents The Bears find themselves in the enviable position of competing in a tough league all season mce to then to meet somebody their long with a own size in play as they enter the tournament this season. With three starters and a part-tim- e starter back from last years club, the Bears dont appear to be in over their heads for the upcoming Region One race and could very well walk off with the league cross-countr- y 6 e 0 . post-seaso- n 3-- title Second-yea- r head coach Paul Jeppesen, who guided the resurgent Bears back into prominence last season, will send an experienced squad consisting of six seniors and several talented juniors onto the hardwixids this Tuesday at the Roy High gum The game is scheduled to begin at 7 30 p m ,J : W'werwi JIM MCMAHON (with ball) prepares to lay in two pointer against the Logan GriJies. Royals take fifth straight, stun Logan with 9 win 61-5- BY KEITH Dl NCN The Roy High Royals are for real Coach Ted Smith's running-gunninbunch won their fifth straight contest last Friday at Roy with a stunning g victory over Logan Coach Sm.th who has had the taller teams in the past, is wondering whether he likes the brand of basketball that his players are presenting now even more than before. Last week's win kept the Royals undefeated in league play at and set them up for a big duel on Tuesday with the Bear River Bears The Bears are also undefeated coming off a big wm over the hapless Bonneville Lakers. At the onstart of the new cage season, many supposed that the Royals would be a challenge but not a solid threat But with Rick Stonehocker. Doug Porter, Dan Smith. Jim McMahon, and Greg Nich Is leading the way, its proven very hard to beat them With both Logan and Bear River going into tournament at the end of the regular season play, three or four other Region One teams will qualify for a coveted spot in the state tournament at the University of Utah For the Royals it would lie their third straight year under Coach Smith The Royals toughest challenge this season has been from East High 0 Leopards who were undefeated going into the Provo game last Saturday night Roy lost the game 62 49 in a tough battle. The Royals completely wore their taller opponents out with the running type of play that they execute. Logan is clearly one of the powers in Region One. But the Royals were better last Friday in nearh every aspect of the game, on the floor, the tan support, from the older genera'ion and the fantastic studentbody that the Royals are boasting, in the coaching ranks and m the desire to wm. The Grizzlies had beaten the Bonneville leakers the week before and were clearing up a few mistakes before they met with the Roy Royals The Grizzlies came out smoking and began to pull out behind the nifty work of their talented forward, Bruce Gardner But Stonehocker, who has come to the Royals rescue so often in the past, came through with a couple of jumpers and unbelievabie to even things up Logan held the first quarter lead at but were down at the half Both 'earns played the same kind of game in the first half, but as the second half wore on, the Royals were working more to the inside while the Grizzlies were content to shoot around the porinnter and hox for the best 21-2- 37-3- 4 wrestling opens season, Royals win Roy pulled out a big victory over the Bear River Bears to open the 1975-7Region One wrestling season Bonneville meanwhile lost to the Weber Warriors 40 37 Both teams won't see action until the early part of January Roy will then wrestle the Viewmont Vikings on January the 6th while the Lakers meet Skvview on January 8th Also that week, the Royals take on the Box Elder Bees on their home mats The results ot last weeks matches are listed below Box Elder, Roy and Weber each picked up victories in their opening Region One dual wrestling meets Thursday Box Elder won all but one match m rolling to an easy i,o 3 decision ovei Logan Roy traveled to Bear Rivei and came away with a triumph, while Weber hosted Bonneville and posted a win In a practice meet. It is also a very important part of high school athletics around this area, in that everyone has a chance to get involved. But fan support seems to be even a bigger subject than many realize. The persons that benefit most from the support of their backers, besides the backers themselves are the teams that they support. Its a big thing for a high school athlete to b playing in a game that is being taken in by a packed gym. He is supplying the onlookers with something that he enjoys doing and in the process it is helping to build character. But when a group of athletes are performing before lackluster home crowds, the ego drops to rock bottom levels. It is especially difficult if the team is winning regularly. This type of situation has invaded the winter sports events at Clearfield High School. Of course I attend a good part of the winter sports events, and I have noticed that the crowds have been sparse, particulary during basketball contests. But when the players themselves come up to you and tell you for the happenings it can be disgusting. The wrestlers have had only one home match and that was put on in the afternoon, so the school nearly packed the gym. But every sporting event cant be put on in the afternoon What troubles me the most about the entire situation, is that s in the Falcons are not losers. They win regularly students the all to are So where be named. almost any sport faculty, and alumni to back them up. The basketball team is disgusted and once they begin to get restless over a subject they really shouldnt be worrying about, they may begin to lose a few more contests. In my opinion though, I dont Blink the Falcons will lose. Theyll keep on winning, even if they have to do it without the support that they deserve. The ones that have attended the Clearfield games so far this season, have been the same old tireless supporters The ones that are in the attendence to the games arent the ones to blame even though you sometimes look up into the sparse covered bleachers and say to yourself, why can t they come to the game. The empty space up there is to be blamed, not the people who turned out. OK, by now youve probably got a half dozen excuses why you couldnt possibly make it to the game. The only thing that there is to say, is that if the players can show up for the game then so can you Those that could care less of whether Clearfield has a team, are not only cheating yourself but 15 varsity players and the rest of the studentbody that shows up for the games to yell till their throats are hoarse. The bad weather cancelled one game this season and it was made up two weeks later. The weekend that the Falcons played the Bingham and Logan teams, the support was the worst that I d ever seen it at a basketball traditioned school like Clearfield A few players on the team received information that it was the smallest crowd ever at the high school for a couple of weekend games Coach Reid had a couple of games to win, but after hed picked up No 3 and 4 he was speechless over the support Once again, dont get me wrong, the support of the people at the games in superb but look what it could be like with everyone there Some say that Coach Reid has given up on the people that dont come out. But he hasnt given up on winning as his team has won four of their last five games and three in a row In Payson, the town that I came from before coming here, because it was basketball time If you arrived late for a game, believe me, you couldnt find a seat in the entire place, not a single one Boy, and if you loved the team enough, you'd stay and stand to watch I know weve got the support here, because of how the students worked when we went to state last season, said Coach Reid Im probably a little bit more vocal on this subject since I attend games at Roy and Bonneville to do the same kind of work that I do for the Falcons. If I were to rate the fan support, including students, pep club, ban marching groups, cheerleaders, and the older alumni and parents, of any school Ive seen this season in any sport, Id have to go with the Royals They are fabulous Even during the bad weather, the people that I mentioned above all showed up for the games. The Royals gym is no smaller than the Falcons, yet in every game they have packed their side of the stands with ease Even when the team traveled to meet East High in Salt Lake they had a very A lot of the credit goes to the Roy respectable crowd Boosters Club which is growing with leaps and bounds. This organization is responsible for a lot of the support that sporting events have recieved this season. During the state football playoffs, both the Falcons and the Royals showed tremendous support But any time youre team is going to the state playoffs, you can expect top notch support, especially football. One player on Clearfield's basketball team remarked that some of the Falcons cheerleaders do not even show for the games. My opinion is that they are just an important as the players on the athletic team. What would happen if Max Livingston decided he had to work for the next two Fridays or Doug Porter decided he had something else in mind the night of the game. They wouldnt be around to much longer no matter who they were. One Clearfield cheerleader has already been reportedly suspended The cheerleaders of any school are the leaders of the pep and enthusiasum that should be present. If they fail, the slack is hard to pick up. How about the pep clubs, Clearfields is respectable but they cant do everything. The Falcons big bird, their mascot, is tremendous but he cant supply a whole games zeal. I suppose things will pick up when the regular season schedule begins, but anyone who has attended the Falcons games, would have to admit that the support has been shoddy for a winning team. Sometimes I tend to think that girls athletics has had something to do with the problem. Not much, but it has had some, Theyve grown so much that there tends to be a balance now. By balance I mean, you come to my event and Ill come to yours. It shouldnt be that way, and hopefully it never will get a good root to spread. Boys athletics are the sporting events to bring the school closer together, its always been that way and I dont think that it will change. The girls sports are good and I enjoy watching them occasionally, but they are for the girls to enjoy and have fun in, not to be as competitive as the boys. Once they go beyond that point, 1 think theyve lost their entire meaning. I dont know the policy on having pep assemblies at Clearfield High, but in any case they must be pretty strict. This is one of Coach Reids biggest gripes. Why cant there be more student get togethers before the game so that everyone can get more accustomed to pulling together the victory. If you dont have some pep assemblys what are you to have. For that one I dont have an answer because there isnt one In concluding Id like to say that the Falcons have some improvement to make in supporting basketball, wrestling, and swimming events. There are well over 1700 students in the school and when only one or two hundred show for the game, then something is missing. Where are the other 1500 no show students. For the Royals, keep up the good work. I was impressed with the time that I saw cheerleaders enthused to go to a night wrestling match at Bear River High. You usually dont find that kind of support and enthusiasm at too many schools around the state. What is unique is that everyone in the school is working for everyone else and the final product is that they dont lose too often. After all, the Royals have yet to lose to a Region One opponent in any of the major sports this season. 1 pre-seaso- n play offs.
