Well, Over the past decade, Utahs major colleges have gone through as many head basketball coaches as the teams have gone through outstanding four-yea- r lettermen. Heres a rundown of each head coach except BYUs Frank Arnold At presstime, the information on the Cougars head coach was not available. Taking over a team in the middle of the season is not the way one would normally choose to begin his career as a head coach, but Neil McCarthy had no other choice. Fortunately, McCarthy has devoted his life to attaining a head coaching position, and was well prepared when the opportunity came his way McCarthys team compiled a 5 7 record, losing a pair of contests after he had taken over the reins You can bet that will be the only losing record he will have as head man at Weber State Neil served for 34 years as an assistant at Weber before being pushed into the top job During that time he was the principal recruiter for the Wildcats, and most of the current members of the team were brought to Ogden by him. In addition tto his recruiting chores, McCarthy designed the defense, which has consistently been one of the most effective in the nation. Prior to his Weber State days, McCarthy was a highly successful high school coach in California, where he compiled a record of 124 wins against just 50 losses. His stress on a disciplined offense and tenacious defense was apparent even with his prepo squads. Himself an outstanding athlete and an exceptional basketball player, Neil starred for two years at Vallejo J C. in California, then played 11. Theres a feeling of dynasticism surrounding Utah States basketball program in this, Dutch Belnaps second season as head coach. Its like a flashback to the feelings surrounding Aggie teams of the 60s n the Ags sent five teams to tournaments in that decade and Belnaps been there, too. Dutch was an assistant at USU for five years before he was designated the school's Uth head basketball coach last year. He promptly went to work, fashioned a rookie season, and it was evident the Ags were coming back. He joined Ladell Andersens staff season and during prior to the 1968-6his five assistantship years was important in the USU program that won 80 games and played in two NCAA tournaments. That includes the NCAA Western Regional Championship game in 1970 against UCLA. He spent three years directing the frosh program. While compiling an impressive 3 record, he coached the likes of Jeff Tebbs, Bob Lauriski, Jim Boatwright and Nate Williams, among others. Later he spent two years as the chief assistant and became head coach in March, 1973. post-seaso- 16-1- Allow you to make tax deferred contributions to your personal retirement plan US HELP YOU PLAN FOR YOUR BUT DO IT TODAY RETIREMENT LET - Call Larry, Your Savings Counselor at 773-691- 1 Fodspol Sons AND LOAN ASSOCIATION Ogden, Brigham City and Roy, Utah nnnnnnhnnnnanacinaa Daaaaaanuaa Julie Evans, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Jack Evans of 4911 Kiwana Drive, placed 5th in vaulting at the state meet Beth Halpin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs W. Dutch is a firm disciplinarian who generally softsells rather than screams his players into respect. And, he is not one to allow his talent to get out of hand over playing time and who scores the points. An Aggie grad, class of 1958, Dutch Head Coach received his masters degree from Utah State University in 1965. He had earlier played football and basketball at Weber Junior College. He was General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers Ogden farm club the summers of 1967 and 1968. The second year he was minor league baseball's "Executive of the Year." He was a prep coach in three sports at Ogden's Weber High where he assumed the head basketball coaching duties in 1966. His 1961 Warrior baseball team won the states high school title A Navy veteran and native of Ogden, Dutch and his wife Faye have three sons: Rob (17), Tim (16) and Mike (14). |
