At about a point opposite Valhalla Camp, the line was almost level with the road and could be seen from the road As the canyon went downhill, the pipeline went uphill and when it reached the mouth of Ogden Canyon it was high up on the mountain Being as high as it was, the water on its downhill plunge operated the power plant, making electricity for wide use in Ogden When I was a youngster, about 15, I was visiting with some friends at the Lewis Camp. The pipeline at this point was about halfway up the mountain and one day we hiked up to see it. As I recall, the pipeline was made of parallel planks about eight inches wide and about 12 feet long. The planks had been beveled at the lumber yards, on all sides, to form a pipe. It took many thousands of these planks to make the pipeline. In those days, there were no steel piping or concrete to fit the purpose. Of course, there were steel bands around the planks to hold them together. There were innumerable tunnels along the path of the Ogden Canyon pipeline, and one of them was just above Lewis Camp. These tunnels had to be big enough so that repairs could be made if the pipeline was damaged in any entured into the way. tunnel . ive the Lewis Camp, t l only went inside a little ways for it was too dark and too dangerous I thought, to go farther There was a plank about 2 inches by 12 inches by 12 feet long that was used as a walkway along the top of the pipeline, used by pipeline walkers who went along the Canyon pipeline at certain intervals, about once a week, to see if there were any leaks or damage to the pipe from cascading boulders coming down the mountain The pipeline walkers had to investigate the tunnels, too It was a scary job as well as dangerous for often there were rattlesnakes hiding in dark places near the pipeline "I also recall that there was a tiny hole in the pipe, probably bored there by the walkers so they could get a drink at certain places. There was one of these holes at the point where I visited and cheeked the pipeline. The hole was plugged by a common wooden match, and when the match was removed, a small stream of water about two feet long burst out. A guide told me it was his drinking fountain, and we all had a drink. p.m. The drink was refreshing as Ogden as won- derful artesian wells water supply is today. Of course, there is another pipe on the south side of Ogden Canyon now that carries the water to Ogdens reservoirs and down to the city, handy for everyone to enjoy drinking today. |
