The fact that it does occur gives cause for concern, and additional research, but no cause for alarm. o f other states and Canadian provinces indicate the higher mercury levels in pheasant samples taken during the summer periods were markedly reduced in the samea-rea- s sampled near or during the pheasant season. Mercury is a common component of commercial of fertilizer, preparations herbicides, and fungicides for lawn treatments. Contamination of fish and wildlife could conceivably occur from many of the above uses; however, the most common source of mercury in game birds has apparently been consumption of treated grain. Safe Levels of Contamination To date there has been disagreement general various agencies as to the acceptable levels of mercury contamination in food. Suggested levels have varied from 0 to 1 parts-per- million of mercury. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has established 0.5 ppm as the maximum level allowed for interstate shipment of food. The World Health Organization has set 0.05 ppm as the tolerance level, while the Food and Drug Directorate of Canada considers 0.1 ppm as the "actionable level for food products. Levels suggested by Idaho, and Washington generally conform to that specified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. i Reddi-Mi- Quality washer fluid 1 M M l W d il x in gal-lon- g plastic bottle. Residues have been found in wheat, barley, rice, tomatoes, potatoes, eggs and cury residues. a WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID Background Information Mercury has been recognized as a contaminant of the environment for a relatively short period of time. The problem was recognized in Japan about 1953. Swedish scientists began working with it in 1956. Investigations in Canada commenced in 1965 Closure of the hunting seasons in Alberta last year touched off widespread research efforts aimed primarily at determining the incidence and levels of mercury contamination in game bird populations. Indications are that mercury pollution is a global problem since mercury compounds are being released to the environment from a wide variety o' sources in agriculture and industry. The first mercury seed dressings were developed in Germany about 1914 and quickly came into widespread use. In 1967, containing pesticides were licensed in the States for household, agricultural and industrial use. On May 11, 1968, the Department of Agriculture restricted use of 33 of these products and cancelled registration (prohibiting all use) of 31 ctners.
