Roy, Utah 3 SO THAT THE VOTERS CAN MAKE AN ENLIGHTENED DECISION The Following FACTS are PRESENTED to the PU B L I C Concerning the STRICT TAX LEEWAY ELECTION NEED 1. FOR WHAT THE TAX INCREASE WILL COST ADDITIONAL REVENUE The basic salary schedule for teachers in Weber County School District is now below that of neighboring school districts, making the task of recruiting new teachers almost impossible. 2. Attracting a"d holding the most competent teachers in our district is essential to maintaining the current educational programs in our school system and maintaining the current level of quality education. 3. An increase in salaries to remain competitive with our Utah School Districts is impossible within the limits of the present taxing power of this board since some neighboring districts with whom we compete for teachers are already operating with voted leeway taxing programs. 4. This school district ranks 5th from the bottom of 40 school districts in taxable wealth per pupil, placing the district in a further unfavorable competitive position. 5. Additional expenses will be incurred in the future with the opening of a large junior high school and another senior high school soon to add further to the operational expenses of this school system. 6. It is educationally unwise for the district to attempt to grant salary increases by decreasing the number of teachers in the district below the present level since this will add to present teacher loads and cause serious deterioration in the educational product of this school system. 7. The Board of Educa'ion pledge to the public a determination to use the taxing power authorized by this election judiciously and with due conscience for the present heavy tax burden borne by the people of Weber County. 1 . Board intention law next year. is to levy only a portion of taxing authority provided under the leeway 2. Total authority that would be granted to the board is approximately 7.5 mills increase. The board has no intention of levying this total amount next year and will keep in mind the current tax burden carried by the people in using taxing authority granted by the public. of actual value, represent the in3. The following typical amounts, based upon 20 creased cost per month on a six mill levy increase . . . taxpayers will be able to estimate their costs from the figures below: (The board is not planning to increase the levy as high as six mills next year . . . this is for informational purposes.) A $12,000 home would pay $1 .20 per month additional school tax. 6,000 home would pay $1 .60 per month additional school tax. A $1 A $20,000 home would pay $2.00 per month additional school tax. 4. Business and farm property owners will be able to figure their increases through obtaining their total assessed values. It is important to keep in mind that it costs $1.00 per year for each mill increase levied against $1,000 of assessed valuation. 5. The assessed valuation per child in the Weber School District age assessed valuation per child is $7,1 35. is $3,300. The state aver- Please consider the needs prsented on left hand side above.
