Wall ace F. Bennett, RUlah Sen. Bennett said the funds are urgently needed to keep the Mmuteman program on its present developement rate two years ahead of original sche dule An Air Foyce request for the funds last year were turned down by the House and Senate Appropriations over the objection of Sen Bennett. The Air Force told Sen. Ben 1 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22, I960 RIVERDALE Schcnley Vodei dis LUMBER !,l turn factiRies to the Bureau of the Budget If approved by the bureau, the request will be included in the spending bill for new military construction submitted to the 87th Congress next year.' Sen. Bennett said the request funds would be used to build five new buildings at Hill AFB and modify and repair 14 exis-tio- n structures for the repair and periodic inspection of the Mmuteman, This facility in needed to insure the missile will function properly at all times if it becomes necessary to use it in time of national emergency, Sen. Bennett said. The senator asked the Bureau of Budget to clear the request for congressional action as soon as possible. In any event, funds undoubtedly will be approved so work on these facilities might be started in this fiscal yearr or shortly after the new fiscal year starts next July 1, he said. Sen. Bennett said the Air Force requested substatiates his statements before the senate appropriations subcommittee last June in support of the program. At that time the Utah senater urged the funds for these facilities be included m the current Years approjriations because the Minuateman was expected to run ahead of schedule, making the facilities nee cessary long before original plan. Sen Bennett also said at that time it appeared more logical for the Air Force to supervise the maintence of the Minute-mabecause it had similar supervision in other program IYi turning down the request last June the House subcommittee asked the Air Force for a study to determine whether periodic the mantence work on the Mmuteman could best be preformed by the Air Force or the prune contractor for the missile Boeing Airplane Co Air Force officials told Sen Bepnett lluy have concluded that maintence work on the missile can be best preformed at Hill AFB by military civilian employes rather than by the Boeing Airplane Co The Mmuteman will be assembled at Hill YFB by Boeing in an $11 million plant now under construction This plant in acheduled to go into operation sometime next year with an ultimate employment of about 1 000 The first stage of the missile will be bui.lt by Thiokol Chem ical Corp.ln a $30 million facility now being built adjacent to its present plant m Box Elder County.
