About seven years ago Mrs. Gundersen joined the Latter-da- y Saint Church. There are two children in the family, Astrid and a brother, Peer. In Norway all young people are required to take seven years elementary education, Astrid asys. After that they have a large variety of choices regarding their future. BEGINNING in the fifth grade everyone takes a class in English the Oxford style English that is. Most of them find that the stilted style they have learned is very confusing when trying to converse with Americans. She spent half a year working for an American family there which aided her greatly in conversational English. Also her mother speaks English. Astrid also learned German in school and would have taken French had she continued her schooling there. One of her remaining obstacles which she is working on very conscientiously is the difference in the pronunciation of the letters of the alphabet. The written form is the same but ia many cases they are pronoiinced entirely different. Most of the boys over there have motor bikes and the girls have motor scooters, she says. They must be 16 years of age to operate them. There are few cars because they are so expensive. One has to be 18 years of age before they can drive a car there. Her impression in the brief time she has been here is that the average young LDS does not fully appreciate how wonderful their religion really is. The stately blopde girl is looking forward to a pleasant and rewarding stay here in the U.S. Time will tell whether she will stay the full four years or whether homesickness will prompt a trip back to her homeland.
