Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Community WEDNESDAY MARCH 10, 2004 Brown Bag programs explore rocky riddles The Bureau of Land Management, in cooperation with the Arizona Strip Interpretive Association and the Bryce Natural History Association, continues its Brown Bag lunch programs with a closer look at two seemingly different geological mysteries. One program investigates bizarre formations on the planets surface, while the other delves deep into unknown chasms be- neath the earths crust. Part of Grand Staircase-Escalant- e National Monument (GSENM), Devils Garden is a surreal landscape of whimsical hoodoos, graceful arches, and inspiring domes. What caused these strange, almost abstract, rock structures? On March 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., noted geologist Keith Watts will try to answer this question and more at a special field study presentation, The Geological Wonders of Devils Garden, held on location at Devils Garden, 12 miles south of Highway 12 off the Road. The presentation is free to the public, who are welcome to bring a picnic lunch. Picnic tables and a toilet are available. In his program, Adventures in Spelunking, GSENM Geologist John Douglas (Doug) Powell will shed light on what he learned during his research expedition to the Caves of the Huautla Plateau, in Oaxaca, Mexico. A remote region of the Sierra tems. At a depth of 1,475 meters and length of 56 kilometers, the Huautla system is presently the tenth deepest and 34th longest cave in the world. What forces carved out these caves and how deep do they go? Discover the answers at Dougs program, presented in two locations. The first presentation will be held on March 16 at the GSENM Kanab Visitor Center located at 745 East Highway 89. The other presentation will be held on March 17 at the Escalante Interagency Office located at 755 West Main Street, Escalante, UT. Both programs will begin at 12 p.m., last about an hour, and are Mazateca Mountains, the free. Everyone is invited to bring Huautla Plateau has long been a brown bag lunch.
