Thats how they got their saddle horses. LeRoy liked strong horses, and spent many winters riding the base of the Kaibab, with snow up to the horses belly, breaking trails to get cattle out of snow banks. Some hard winters, Judd remembers the snow being so deep that the mother cows udders would drag in the snow creating frost bite, so the small calves born early could not suckle. He would gather up the calf, put it on the horse with him and pack it home to bottle feed it. When the movies came to town, Judd was tapped for his cowboy skills, serving as an extra in over 20 movies. A handsome framed picture ofhim serving as a stunt double for Jay Silverheels in the Lone Ranger movie sits on his mantel. It was always exciting, said Judd. I loved the clean air, being outside and enjoying the animals and nature. Judd found time, along with being a busy rancher, to be a school teacher. He taught music and business and a host of other subjects in Kanab for many years. I filled whatever position they needed, said Judd He later became the principal, serving in that position for 10 years.
