Others are based on the real life ofa specific animal, or are true stories of animals rescuing people. They all give parents and teachers a way to increase a childs knowledge and understanding of animals and their needs. Its always good, too, to discuss with your children the books that you read to them. Thats because n anieven some of the mal stories can give youngsters wrong ideas about dnimal care. Homeward Bound and The Lady and the Tramp, for example, are wonderful stories, but they portray animals running loose in the neighborhood. So, in this case, youd want to talk with your children about safety for animals and how to protect them from being hit by a car or being picked up by best-know- strangers. Studies have shown that children who are read to not only develop better reading skills themselves, but do better in school in general. Here in Utah, the honorable Mrs. J acalyn Leavitt has initiated a Read to Me campaign about the importance of reading aloud. Theres more about this at her website, www.utah.govfirstlady readtomeindex.html, along with a letter from Gov. and Mrs. Leavitt about reading to children and tips for parents. Reading is a path to new ideas and increased awareness of the world around us. Reading is the transportation to different places and tiie expansion of imagination. Reading can inspire a love for animals, people, and the earth that creates humane projects that protect all life. 9T7 e; Your Meat; The Man with One Casablanca; Red Shoe; The Way Back; Heidi; Best Friends staffers Cathie Myers and Deanna Carman, with dog Sweet Pea, The Bible and Eddie. present books to Kanab City Librarian Dicki Robinson.
