These contributions will help the SCSO achieve its mission of strengthening communities by reducing poverty and improving the quality of life for Utahns. The Homeless Trust Fund was established in 1990 as a voluntary item on the Utah state tax forms. In 1990, the Trust Fund provided $264,000 to the SCSO. The next year, in 1991, the Trust Fund peaked at $308,000. Since then, the results have been constantly less inspiring. Last year, in 2001, the SCSO received only $141,101 from Utah residents through this program. The SCSO plans to improve the results. The goal of the Power of One campaign is to let people know how easy it is to facilitate change by giving one dollar on your state tax form, said Leticia Medina, the State Community Services Office Director. Its encouraging to think what one dollar from each tax payer can do to empower those who are less fortunate. Utahs 2001 homeless count saw an estimated 77 increase in the incidence ofhomelessness over the past decade. The number of homeless children increased by an astonishing 170 and the number of homeless families by as much as 167. Demand in our shelter increased significantly last year.
