Nov Is The Time To Declare Var On Boxelder Bugs By CLAIR CHRISTENSEN Assistant County Agent Boxelder bugs are becoming more of a problem in Davis County especially now that it is getting cooler weather. These ever-prese- nt bugs are aannoy-in- g when they crawl over persons or objects in the home. They are also undesirable because they soil curtains and drapery. These red and black pests can best be controlled outdoors, so they will not be present in large numbers to invade homes and school rooms later, when cold weather would force them indoors. They are difficult to kill indoors. Although boxelder bugs are difficult to kill, they can be destroyed by liberal applications of 5 per cent DDT in kerosene or by using one pint of 75 per cent Chlordane emulsifiable .concentrate in 2 gallons of water. Spray boxelder bugs as they gather in bunches on sidewalks, tree trunks and walls. This type of control saves insecticide and labor. For ' further information you can obtain a free copy of Extension circular 163, Controlling the Boxelder Bug by writing or phoning at the Exension office in the court house at Farm ington. 1 Stamp albums will be furnished free by local post offices to anyone desiring them. When these are filled, they may then be exchanged at a bank or other financial institution for a United States Series E Saving Bond. Plans are now being made by school administrators, teachers, and volunteer members of the county savings bonds committee to expand student participation in the treasury-sponsoreschool savings program during the ensuing year. d The Treasury hopes to increase by two million students the number able to save regularly with savings stamps.
