Show Sickness and v9ft J Hr A x3Jea(M By Jackie Williams This week we will discuss the theories of prevention and treatment of influenza as presented in U.S. Pharmaceuticals magazine. CAN FLU BE PREVENTED? Influenza can be prevented when a person receives a current influenza vaccine each fall. Vaccines are made up each year with the particular viruses that are expected to cause illness that year. t' The vaccinated person develops the protection antibodies highest in the first few months which usually lasts the five or six months 3T an ordinary flu season. Yearly vaccination prevents flu in about 75 percent of people who take it.. For the rest who take it, it may reduce the severity of illness and save lives. The oral medication amantadine may be used as a preventative for influenza type A, if taken daily as long as flu outbreaks continue In a community. Also during a flu outbreak, it can be used to prevent type A flu in a person newly vaccinated, until the vaccination Your doctor can decide when its takes effect (about two weeks). best to use amantadine for flu prevention. hum m r WHAT ABOUT REACTIONS TO FLU VACCINE? Most people have little or no reaction to flu vaccine. The vaccine is made from dead viruses, so no one can get influenza from receiving a flu shot. The most common vaccine reactions are mild and brief: one in four persons may have a swollen, red or tender area where the shot was given. This disappears in a few days. A much smaller number of people, probably more children than adults, might also develop a slight fever within 24 hours. Usually none of these reactions last more than a couple of days. In addition, allergic reactions to the vaccine have been observed in some people. These could be caused by an egg protein allergy, since the chicken egg in which the virus is grown cannot be completely removed. Such people should be vaccinated only if their own doctor believes it necessary and if the vaccine is given under close supervision by a doctor. HOW CAN FLU AND ITS COMPLICATIONS BE TREATED? For uncomplicated flu, your doctor will probably tell you to stay in bed at home for as long as the sickness is severe and perhaps for about two days after the fever is gone. The oral medication amantadine, available through your doctor, is effective in treating influenza A when begun soon after onset of illness. Taken early, it can shorten the length of illness and reduce the severity of symptoms. A few persons taking amantadine experience side effects such as difficulty sleeping, trembling or depression. These symptoms are usually mild, of brief duration and often go Your doctor should away even when the medicine is continued. decide when amantadine is called for. Your doctor may give you an antibiotic, but only if you develop a bacterial complication. However, people with chronic lung disease often are given antibiotics the moment flu is diagnosed. Physicians should administer vaccine to any person in their practices who wish to reduce their chances of acquiring influenza infection. Persons who provide essential community services, such as employees of fire and police departments, and health rare personnel are not considered to.be at increased occupational risk of serious influenza illness burrnay be considered for vaccination programs to minimize the possible disruption of essential activities that can occur during severe epidemics. Pregnancy has not been demonstrated to be a risk factor for severe influenza infections, except in the largest pandemics of 1918-19and 1957-195- 8. Influenza vaccine is considered generally safe for pregnant women. Nonetheless, when vaccine is given during pregnancy, waiting until the second or third trimester is a reasonable precaution to minimuze any concern over the theoretical possibility of teratogenicity. An activated influenza vaccine should not be given to persons who have anaphylactic sensitivites to eggs. Persons with acute febrile illnesses normally should not be vaccinated until their tern -p or ary symptoms have abated. 19 Plant frees to help conserve home energy With the cold winter winds swirling and whistling around the house, thoughts often turn toward ways to cut back that winter heating bill. Bill Varga, a research horticulturist with Utah State University, says now is a good time to start planning on planting to conserve home energy. If youre plannmg on putting in a few trees and shrubs, Varga says, why not plant them where theyll do the most good. First, he suggests, look at the prevailing winds. The biting cold winds usually come from the north as storm fronts pass over the area; or from the east if the home is located near the mouth of the canyon. These north or east winds can 1 c hanrieled around or over the home by asing an evergreen windbreak (Austrian pine, blue spruce, upright juniper) or a combination of evergreen or deciduous trees and foundaup exposed south-facin- g tions and walls. In the summer, these same trees and shrubs will shade and cool the roof and walls.
