Lyndon the American LaRouche, who once called himself Lenin and who has attacked the nations leading conversative organizations has been described by the news media as a candidate of the far right. The most obstinate communists within the Kremlin are called "archconservatives by Western journalists. In Japan, the conservative party is known as the Liberal Democratic Party. Ip Australia, conservatives are simply Liberals; In Sweden, they are Moderates. If youre confused, youre not alone. The labels we apply to politicians are often mis -leading, because there are no clear standards. What makes one Senator an ultrarightist and another a moderate? Nobody knows for sure, but recent research provides a clue. During a five year period ending October 31, 1984 THE WASHINGTON POST used the term far right 390 times and far left 131 times. Ultraright was used 47 times, Ultraleft only was used 74 times, 12 times; ultraconservative ultraliberal only 27 times. Of stories referring to extremists of the left or right, 56 percent referred to rightists and five percent to leftists; the remainder of the stories referred to both left and right. There were 58 stories using the term and there was one story (one!) archconservative using the term "archliberal. The Nexis computer system, which includes THE NEW YORK TIMES, the POST, and other newspapers magazines, newsletters, and wire services, lists 846 stories that have appeared in the nations press in the last few years using the word ultraconservative. Only 118 stories have used the word ultra-liberand a random check Indicates that the overwhelming majority of those cases involved reports of name --calling by politicians (Senator attempted to paint his opponent as ultraliberal When a reporter characterized a today . . politician as "ultra the odds were ten -- to -- one that the politician was a conservative. A similar study of television network news stories during the recent presidential campaign revealed that the term far right was used ten times as often as far left despite the fact that one of the major candidates traveled to Cuba to praise that nations communist government. ng exotic radicals, the extremists, the right, the fringe, the "reckless or the radical right. In all, CBS called the Republicans or a similar exconservative, right pression 114 times during their convention. At the Democratic convention, where the party nominated Its most liberal ticket in history, CBS referred to Democrats as liberal, left wing, or some variation only 20 times; Democrats were called centrists, or conservatives kook middle-of-the-roade- 16 If Sherlock Holmes were called in on the case, given and asked to deduce whether the national news media were biased against conservatives, how long would it take him to figure it out? Politicians are ultras and arches and far rightists by one standard only -- - the standard of prevailing opinion within the national journalistic community. Ted Kennedy Is not an ultraliberal because, to the average Washington reporter, he seems rather moderate. Yet the ability to label persons as far right or far left can be the ability to make or break political careers. I know ultraconservaives who received that lable for doine nothine more radical than supporting Ronald Reagan for the GOP presidential I know Marxists who get away with nomination; calling themselves progressives or even "moderates. The people who apply the labels usually have a tremenpartisans within the news media dous amount of power, and theyre not about to give it up by applying any sort of consistent standard to their Taxonomy (the science of classification) is often regarded as the dullest of subjects, fit only for mindless ordering and sometimes denigrated within science as stamp collecting . . . If systems of classifications were neutral hat racks for hanging the facts of the world, this disdain might be justified. But classifications both direct and reflect our thinking. The thing that bothers me is that weve never knownUP&Lto finance any project - certainly not $60 million, without going before the PSC for a rate increase to pay for It. So I have to ask myself, and the PSC Have we rate payers already paid the $60 million for Hunter IV, that UP&L is now asking us to pay again? Before they add another dollar to our monthly bill for the next five years, we think that question ought to be answered to the rate payers satisfaction.
