Show Parowan Gamblings By Liz Zaleski 477-35- 61 Qv;ens is running for Governor Salt Lake Attorney and former Congressman Wayne Owens is running for Governor. He announced his candidacy on March 12, and was in Beaver County talking to supporters in Milford and Beaver Monday, March 26th. Im running for governor, Owens said, not walking referring to his walk across the second congressional district in 1972 when he ran for Congress. Owens' walk caught the fancy of Utahns in 1972 and he was elected to the 93rd Congress, but was defeated in his bid for the UJS. Senate in 1974 by Senator Hatch. Born in Panquitch he graduated from the University of Utah, College of Law and served as administrative assistant to Senator Frank Moss and Senator Edward Kennedy. After his defeat in 1974 he served as President of the Mont real Canada Mission for the LES Church, returning in 1975 to practice law in Utah and Washington, D.C. In talking to supporters, Owens said he will work for industrial development in Utah, not only for the Wasatch Front, but for all of Utah. Owens and his wife Marlene have five children. bulls. Condolences are sent to the family of Dortha Hulet, who died of cancer. Funeral services were held for her on Wednesday, March 21 in Paro-wa- n ThirdFourth Ward. Milton and Patty Hulet of Arizona have been here with his dad and planned to spend several days. Dortha was a very pleasant, friendly neighbor and was known for her beautiful handmade quilts. Betty Decker spent a week rein Salt Lake with her cently daughter, Helen Lamoreaux. Helen had surgery on her leg and Betty reports that she is coming along fine now. Phyllis Blake spent four days at H the Western Region Leadership convention in Las Vegas. She received a J.C. Penney scholarship, which paid most of the tuition for the convention. Tammy Janes, Ammie and Andrea hoped to spend a few days this week in Delta with Tammys folks, the Petersons. Gary has gone with some friends to go fishing on the Colorado River. Rula Orton has had Dick and JoAnn Hunter, their daughter and baby for a recent weekend visit. The Hunters are from Colton, California. They also visited Dicks who resides in the Rest mother, Home in Parowan. We enjoyed a recent visit from Toms sister, mother and niece. Betty and Kelly OBrien and Stella Zaleski stopped here last Sunday on their way home from the Dan Zaleskis in Milford. Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7 have been proclaimed by 4-- Nineteen recently purchased childrens titles from a new collection, in honor of Mrs. Fae N. Benson, at the Parowan Public Library. The little readers and storybook selections are a gift from friends and family of Mrs. Benson, who served on the Library board for many years. Librarian Leta Evans chose and ordered the books. Some of the selections include BLUEBERRIES FOR SALE by Robert McCloskey, PINOCCHIO by Margaret Hlllert, THE GIRL WHO LOVED WILD HORSES by Paul Goble, RANGER DON AND THE WOLVERINES by Robert Whitehead. LITERARY CLUB At the March 6th Parowan Li- terary Club meeting, a report about Abigail Fillmore, wife of Pres. Millard Fillmore, was given by Barbara Burt. Pres. Franklin Pierces wife, Jane Pierce, was discussed by Club member Gwen Jones. This meeting was held at the home of Alice Mitchel, who served as hostess along with cohostess Nell Bentley. The March 20 meeting of the Parowan Literary Club was held at the home of Golda Guymon. She served as hostess, assisted by Helen Stones. Anna Cox reported on the niece of our 15th UjS. Pres. James Harriet Lane served Buchanan. as her Uncles hostess at the White House while he served from 1857 to 1861. Pres. Buchanan never married. As a child Harriet lived in Pennsylvania and studied piano. She received political training at Wheatland, Pa. and was familiar with upper class living by the age While working with her of 17. politically -- active Uncle James, she traveled extensively and met many persons, Including distinguished Queen Victoria and Napolean. After leaving the White House Harriet married Henry Johnston at the age of 36. She insisted that a statue of Pres. Buchanan be built. She started a home for invalid children also. Bertrude Mitchell gave a history on Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of Pres. Abraham Lincoln. Mary came from a wealthy Illinois family and she was known as quite a debutante. She said that she fully intended to marry a Pres, of the United States. At the age of 24 she married Abraham Lincoln. They had four boys, but lost three early in life. She was quite ill after losing them. She was known for her moodiness, and sharp tongue and lavishness in dress. After her death in 1882 she was described as a misunderstood, tragic Pres. Lincoln wrote of figure. her, "My wife is as handsome as when she was a girl and I fell in love with her and I have never fallen out." -- Danial Con-d- ie received the coveted Eagle award at a court of honor held recently in the Beaver Fourth Ward. The Eagle oath and award were given to Danial by Bishop Clark Smith. For his Eagle project, Danial constructed and put up a sign identifying the Manderfield L.DJ5. church welfare farm. Danial is the son of Vernon and Carol Condle.
