Show People's Freeway Family Wins Award for Decorations Police Officer Charles W. Bernards treats youngsters to Christmas party. by Laura Briggs Youngsters Share A Special Day With Favorite "Cop" "We decorate the same every year. Don't know why we were singled out to win an award this year," pondered Russell Pettet of 730 South West Temple. The anticipation of maintaining the family tradition, teamwork among Mr. and Mrs. Pettet and their seven children, and sharing their holiday spirit with their neighbors is a considerable part of the Pettet's yearly outdoor Christmas On October 19, 1972, Police Officer Charles W. Bernards, at that time assigned to Traffic on a motorcycle, was struck by a drunken driver running a stop sign. For days the officer hovered guests were bused by Officer Bernards to Sugarhouse Park for tubing and sleigh riding and where Rusty Jones, wife of Chief J. Earl Jones, filled them upwith her homemade chili. Exhausted and happy they between life and death with returned home with fond serious head and facial injuries. The entryway was warm and smelled piney. The narrow end of the living room was full of a giant, spreading Christmas tree, under which were many, many gifts for the Pettets and their children, five grandchildren, relatives and friends. The fireplace mantle, which runs the length of the south wall of the living room, was a Christmas world in miniature. In the adjoining dining room, the corner was piled high with Christmas stockings, filled and ready for distribution in the name of the Pettet's church. "This years," stated Mr. Pettet. "All the kids were home. My wife and were both well and able to participate, though she's been feeling badly since." Both Mr. and Mrs. Pettet have cancer. Six years ago, one of their six daughters died of cancer. It is housed in the Jefferson School at 1071 South West Temple, and has been in operation since 1969. Its teachers are local volunteers - housewives, CREDIT7 professionals - and national volunteers through the VISTA program. The classes are small, informal and attempt to be what the students need. In an effort to plan for the future of the school, the staff is conducting a study to determine if there is a need for a Free Volunteer Adult Basic Education program in the Model Cities area different than the Community Schools. The Jefferson Fiee School was the only ft ee adult education program that offered high school credit or G. E. D. credit in the Model Cities aiea.
