Show REVIEW, 19. May B15 1966 Spring Freeze Was Bad... But Spray Bulbs Anyway FORTUNATELY the spring freeze didnt kill all of the fruit buds. We expect to have a scattering of peaches and pears and nearly a normal crop of Golden delicious, Jonathan, and Rome Beauty apples. The red delicious will be quite light however. A light crop of fruit means that we will have to spray in order to have worm free fruit at harvest time. Now the question often ari- ses, what chemical shall I use and what equipment is needed? If you are a backyard gardener, a small powered, a knapsack type or a hose attachment sprayer will do a fair job. Commercial orchardists Or folks with two or three dozen trees may want to get a power sprayer, or hire a competent custom spray operator to do the spraying. One of the most effective chemicals to control codling moth lame on apples and pear trees is a chemical found in the home garden section of garden centers that contain diazinon. D.D.T. and D.D.T. combinations are no longer effective against codling moths. Regardless of what insecticide you use intervals between spray applications Is 15 to 21 days up to near harvest time. Diazinon is very effective in controlling aphids and brown mites. The first cover spray for apples will be applied the latter part of May. Timing of the spray is determined by bait traps. , Peaches should be sprayed when the great fruit is 12 to 34 inches in diameter. Either diazinon, D.D.T. and malathion, or basic lead arsenate can be used. Success in controlling fruit tree pests require: 1. proper timing of the spray. 2. Using the right chemical for the insect pests. 3. Do a thorough and complete Job. Before using any spray material, take time to read the instructions on the label, understand the instructions, and follow directions to the letter. NO MATTER WHAT method used to control weeds, they can be killed easier while they are young. Getting out with a hoe in the garden and scuffing the ground will slaughter very young tender weeds, whereas an ax may be necessary on sunflowers when they get big and tough. Annual weeds, such as red roots, poverty weeds, lambs quarters, knot weeds, and annual grasses can be killed by spraying when the weather is hot with fuel oil, diesel oil or number 3 stove oil. If using this method of controlling weedsi spray only plants that you want to kill. Perennial weeds will not be killed, but they will be knocked down and the top growth will be killed. The herbicide, 2, 4-- D will kill many of the broadleaf plants. All precautions should be taken to keep 2, D away from desirable plants. Even fumes will curl tender susceptible plants, such as tomatoes, grapes, beans, roses, petunias, and many others. A word of caution, DO 4-- NOT USE THE SAMESPRAY-E- R FOR WEED KILLERS THAT IS USED FOR INSECTICIDES. Two separate spray- ers are recommended because D cannot be thoroughly washed out of sprayers. 2, 4-- Again let me stress the imof killing weeds while they are young and before they go to seed. Agronomists tell us that a normal red root (pig weed as they are sometimes called) if allowed to grow to maturity, can produce 117,-0- 00 portance seeds or enough seeds to completely infest a small lot. Weeds reduce yields, take ay beauty of the lawn, and make ugly flower beds. Dead weeds do no harm. THE NUMEROUS KINDS of brand name fertilizers you see when purchasing fertilizers at a garden supply store confuses a person, unless you know what to look for and how to figure unit price of fertilizer in the MANY ECONOMIC AUTHORITIES ADVISE THAT EVERY FAMILY KEEP A CURRENT RESERVE EQUAL TO 3 fo 6 MONTHS of NORMAL INCOME' AND YOUR CURRENT RESERVE SAVINGS SHOULD BE EARNING bag.
