Show They torture poor Chester on a wagon wheel by spinning him slowly over an open fire in one scene This activity is accompanied by grunts, whoops and scowls which convey the feeling that for Apaches, this is more fun than a merry go round It may be fun for the audi ence. too Especially if you don't like Chester Miss Andersson plays a woman captured from her bum of a hus band by a band of skulking savages then wed to an Indian for whom she comes to care a great deal, perhaps because of the child they have, then recaptured by her bum of a hus band only to wind back with the Indians then be rescued by the whites again Somewhere along the flashback her Indian husband dies. It is hoped her bum of a husband does too. but whatever happens, the action match and it reads like a film. whole the goes throughout ping-pon- "There's something m 'Duel' for everyone," admits the United Artists. At least there's plenty of Utah, which gets star billing in the titles and figures colorfully in the scenery. The redrocks in the box canyon where "Duel" was shot blend nicely with the blood and thunder, of which there's plenty. Much of this is supplied by James Garner, a lonely scout formerly mar ried to a Comanche girl who has been killed by guess who? Naturally Garner is upset by this and he shows it in the picture. So beware. Bill Travers get his leg hurt in this picture, since he actually hurt his leg on location. Not shown on film is a scene of an Indian jumping off a cliff flat out, supposedly onto some unsuspecting victim. Rumor from United Artists has it that the Indian was supposed to land in a wooden box. which would break his fall, then crash through onto waiting arms of other stuntmen below the box. The Indian plunged, but only his head went through the bottom of the box. Since the film wound up with the Indians legs waving frantically at the bottom of the screen they had to scrap that sho. Youll recognize the Indian at the premiere by the bandage on his head. Another AU rumor has it our hero saw stars, which is where he got his name, Little Sky. Nevertheless, "Duel at Diablo" is still an exciting adventure film with lots of plot complications and in color too and made ih Utah. So support Utah, if nothing else. Get out and see "Duel before it leaves town. It will run at both the Lyric followand the Highland Drive-Inthe ing premiere. Better yet, make it to the premiere itself which promises to be a real news event , the guide, may 12, 1966 page 3 |
