You can use one bag at a time if this is more convenient, but the entire pour should be completed within an hour. Level the surface with a board across the top of the wood forms. Allow the concrete to harden overnight and then keep it covered with plastic film or wet burlap for three days. Bricks are laid as shown in the diagrams. The centers of the two piers may be filled with broken bricks set in mortar. The last course must have these piers filled with whole bricks as illustrated in the picture of the completed fireplace. The mortar joints for the third and fifth courses of bricks must be made wider halfthan' the standard inch width so that the bricks will extend into the fireplace inch on each opening one-hside. This forms the supports for the grate and the charcoal pan. Some bricks must be cut in half. This is best done with a brickmasons tool that resembles a wide blade chisel. It is called a brick set. Use this set and a hammer to score the bricks on all four sides. A sharp tap of the hammer along this score will break the brick at this point. The dry mixal mortar is convenient for setting the bricks. This, too, must be mixed thoroughly with the quantity of water stated on the label. Can I do this job myself? Mrs. W.S. ANSWER - A sand finish wall can be easily made smooth but the rougher textured plaster must be ground smooth with an electric machine. .To smooth the sand finish, get a small block of concrete, smooth cn one side, that you can easily hold in your hand. Rub this oveT the surface to knock off all the protruding grains of sand. Wipe away the dust. Mix dry spackle powder with water to make a soft paste. Trowel this over the wall in the thinnest possible layer, using a plasterer's trowel. Its purpose is to fill any small indentations. Allow this to dry and then paint the wall with a coat of thin white shellac. Cleaning Aluminum Siding Dear House Doctor; Please tell me how to remove greasy finger marks from white aluminum siding. Mrs. E.Y.L. ANSWER - The best cleaner for any painted surface is which you can purchase from most paint and hardware stores.
