Last Wednesday at a luncheon honoring United Fund workers he let go a beauty. Heres ill-w- the Quote. At the risk of making myself unpopular with certain fundraising agencies, may I report to you that the Easter Seal Drive has taken as much as 50 percent of the intake and administration. No wonder for the cost of it does not qualify for inclusion in the United Fund. The March of Dimes program has spent as much as 35 percent of its intake for fund raising and administration. I do not think that if these facts were generally known, that business feel justified in giving to people and others would ' agencies of this kind. fund-raisi- ng so-cal- led ' "On the other hand, the cost of raising money through the United Fund in Utah County this last year was only eight percent." Dr. Wilkinson's little flight into fantasy is treachorously damaging to both Easter Seal and March of Dimes - particularly when March of Dimes is in the midst of its campaign. It is possible that in some isolated local cases March of Dimes may have been 35 percent, Easter Seal may have been 50 percent - or even higher. In Utah they arent. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, Dr. Wilkinson should have said so. The implications are needlessly damaging to one independent agency - and one agency connected with United Fund (thats Easter Seal in Salt Lake, yes they are included in United Fund here Dr. Wilkinson), r The United Fund doesnt usually indulge in this below the belt kind of warfare. That includes last year's president - John Klas a m?n dedicated to federated giving. Thats fine, Mr. Klas puts his muscle and thourfit into musa he believes in. Other equally dedicated men happen to disagree, with Mr. Klas and other federated giving devotees. But they dont do battle with this kind of tactic....:. fortunately. hundred Salt Lakers some facts. niade his remarks before several they must be answered. Here are Easter Seal spends 27.4 percent of its intake for 1. fund-raisi- ng and administration in Utah. In addition some money to the national Easter Seal foundation - part of which goes is spent for service part for administration. 2. March of Dimes and for fund-raisig, about 6 3. Dr. Wilkinsons ng spends 23 percent of its national intake administration. In Utah 22 goes to for administration. comparison of 50 percent" and "35 percent" against 'eight percent for United Fund is absurd. United Fund administers no charitable agencies. It incurs expenses naturally their percentage oqly of March than is lower Dimes, which both collects and fund-raisin- fund-raisi- ng administers an agency. TJie merits of federated vs. individual agency giving are . too vast to pursue here -- but there are reasonable arguments on both sides. But to call Mirch of Dimes and Easter Seal agencies hurts both worthwhile causes unnecessarily and certainly doesn't reflect to the credit of United Fund. "so-call- ed But Senator , IVs Just Lunch Money t ..... that exciting time when politicians political year make statements that they probably dont mean, or that they say for purposes other than advancing their own convictions. An interesting, phenomenon occurs when a politician who isnt even running makes these kinds of statements. A w Take Senator Wallace Bennett for example. Senator Bennett always says that government costs must be cut -handouts must be stopped, economy must rule. Senator Bennett also always complains when the economy hits at home. This week he sent out a press release urging the Senator Appropriations Committee to restore "uncalled for and drastic cuts in two vital school programs aid to federally impacted school districts and the school milk fund program." If ever a handout existed its the school lunch program -it represents federal largesse at its most grandiose. Most Americans in this day and age can afford lunch for their kids., The poor - on the other hand - can't afford lunch for themselves - or their kids. v Along comes a program wrhich tries to help the poor lift themselves up by their own bootstraps and Senator Bennett - unwilling to expose Utah to the shock of a new idea calls for elimination of these "unproved and uncharted waters of the Great Society." Economy really is essential in government -- but somebody must take the brunt of sacrifice that goes along with economy - and it cant always be the other guy. this matter? It wasnt Pete. It was close, but it wasnt Pete. There were over 500 DemoWhy? crats there and 500 separate theories the most convincing of which is that Chief Deputy - now Sheriff George Q. Nielsen Jr., worked harder than Pete during the last few weeks of the campaign, contacted more delegates and wrote a good strong letter to them. A lot of delegates were impressed with his education and his program. Some felt they shouldnt change donkeys in the middle of Second East. Thats history - but la itself an elementary education for anyone considering politics as a career. George Q. ; Nielsen grew politically during the last month, but a few- weeks ago committed like threatening some gross blunders the wrong people and not pitching the right people. Although last Saturday is history, the results of die meeting of the countys Democratic leaders and die atmosphere of that affair furrowed brows within the party from Governor Ramptons office to district workers living rooms. Many are pleased that Nielsen was chosen - theyre calling it a swing away from the cult of personality. Both political parties have their family quarrels - the GOP usually along ideal-ogic- al lines - the Democrats about personalities. Some Democrats are saying that the choice for Nieisen means that qualification rather than personality won the day - theyre mostly Nielsen .... .... - supporters. The dizzy excitement signalling the start of a political year mixed Saturday with the anger and bitterness of a party in trouble. Wayne L. Black - county Democratic chairman - successfully shut the door and turned the latch on those who would have opened the meeting to discussion of Davy Jones - Buck Brady - the Commission, et al. Its too late to hide the family quarrel. So. . . . what next. Some would like to unify the party, concentrate and publicize whatever assets might be found (there will be an attempt over the coming months to move decisively on flood control and turn it into a positive program and a political asset) and fight the good fight as best it may be fought. But there are those, as well, who would broom . . . like - right to denounce the black sheep publicly, make a public confession and catharsis. In the middle of the floor of the big baUroom in the Newhouse Saturday lay a little blue card. After the shouting, after the frenzy it locked a little like the confetti left from a gay New Year's Eve Party. It was neatly printed - and on the front We are cover was titled Scuttled? treading a pathway to defeat. The style was first person singular but it wasnt signed. Its been difficult to find out whos responsiso far ble. Embarrassment and ridicule have been our lot throughout the suspicious, mismanagement, bad judgement and Disunity that has arisen in our County, read the mysterious blue card. It went on to itemize the problems weve all read about. The anonymous author then said lam not proud of that which has transpired and feel reluctant to defend our Party when these embarrassments occur. Then the card urged a resolution of censure against all elected officials who Have betrayed those who worked for their, elections as well as a public trust It concluded This is not a call for a bolt or revolt Just a geniune concern and dissatisfaction for that which our party has has been going on, been scuttled. The risks of following the little cards advice are great. In an election year no political party can afford disunity. The alternative? Find anew candidate for auditor, minimize the Grand Jury results, Marv Jensons car, the HaU of Justice problems; and try to get the county commissioners to harmonize. Taat last is easier said than done. The other affirmative task will be to concentrate on the positive aspects of the Governors program and record. But this intra-par- ty disagreement in the denouncers tactics isnt over . - the may have their say. with or without party approval. Theyre spending about 65 thousand dollars just to house a bunch of big monkeys. We dont need that. Weve got the County Commission. Theres more monkey business going on in the County Commission than you'll ever see at the Zoo.
