Show I I REVIEW. Lutheran Reformation Choir And symphony Make Waves In Recording World OFF THE RECORD - One of the biggest businesses In the performing arts is the recording business History has witnessed our "adjustment" to LPs, stereo and tape Remember the universal sail tln greeted the industry's ,A)usal of the New : New Sound in discs Look and s .and systems? Gone is the wail Tne industry not only survived but grew fat on the revolution The record business is good And two SLC organisations play important roles therein Richard P Condie and the mormon Tabernacle Choir are one of the top properties In Columbia's mass market Maestro Abravanel's Utah Symphony is the top American recording orchestra the major minor companies, Vanguard Their discs are earmarked for the connoisseur market. Tne choirs tie-i- n with Columbia has witnessed joint ventures of the SL singers with both Philadelphia and New York orchestras under and Bernstein batons It Is difficult to go wrong, for example, on the choirs two gold record albums with and the Philadelphia dy dy orchestra and "The Messiah" 'The Lord's Prayer " It means money In the bank to Columbia, Philly and the choir It is that company's most valuable property per album This is something most local citizens cannot conceive Both albums are great, quality-wise Also high in quality Is the same combines superb waxing of Brahms' German Requeim. sung In English to the dismay of purists No purist I, it remains in m7 book, the TCs single loftiest achievement to date Still to be released (and soon) is the same forces' performance of Beethovens Ninth, completed over a year ago It should rank among the greatest Ninths in the industry's It was sung in Gerhistory man Purists note! The TC's most definitive recording results when they sing with a great orchestra and perform a masterwork In addition, they have some excellent seasonal, patriotic and sacred albums to their credit as well Since Dr Condie I assumed cooductorship of the Choir eight years ago, its recording work and success to great has steam-rollerdimensions Pushed by Columbia, they may have recorded too many albums too fast (over twenty to date) While Joy of Christmas (Bernstein-NPhil ) ranks as one of the Choirs finest, its most recent release This Land is Your Land martially with Ormandy-Phil- a ), is less ed Y good The first pops album for the TC, It Is convincing about thirty percent of the time Part of the ut problem is repertoire Part is arrangements The singers sound unconvincing, for example, in such questionable inclusions as She ll Be Cornin Round the Mountain, This Land is Your Land, Sweet Betsy, and When I First Came to this Land This is not their metier, and they obviously realize it Best performances come with leroy Robertson's craftworthy arrangement of Beautiful Dreamer (a genuine tune to start with), and de Courmler arrangements of Shenandoah and Deep River. While Dr Condie conducts forces in several selections, it is rather obvious that Crm.nndy kept the cream himself Two orchestral selections - Gospel Train (Gould) AND I Wonder as I Wander-com- e off brilliantly, quite naturally W hile there is excellent folk mrtenal worthy of TC albums. This Land is Your Land falls No doubt it will sell short like But it will not draw comment from the nation's top record critics as did The Messiah, Requiem, and as will the Ninth when released combined hot-cak- es She has vens and Madeira proved a gifted recitalist as well But her forte may well prove to be opera It was a feather in Civic Music-U- J Artists cap to present her KSL-T- V came up with its finest LDS Conference production jobs in history during Sunthe nationally-televisThe day morning session ed Utah Symphony operates under an entirely different philoThe mass market sophy demands are more than adequately met by the Big Three From (NY, Philly, Boston) the outset the symphony has been in the connoisseur field First With Westminster, more and they recently, Vanguard, are doing very well Nearly a quarter of a million albums of Utah Symphony now reside in private collections throughout the world Particularly is the demand heavy In Germany and Austria and for good Mr Abravanel has conducted Berlin and Vienna orchestras In recent years and has a genuine following there The tourist to these countries invariably sees advertising albums of Utah Symphony In record shop windows The symphony has 16 Vanguard ablums on the market, the latest being the only commercial recording of Milhaud s Pacem in Terris. This was hailed as "the Miss a Solemnis of the 20th century" by the LA Times last month The Mahler 7th and 8th symphonies (separate albums) brought Maestro Abravanel the Bruckner Society s Mahler medal at ceremonies on UU Earcampus last Tuesday lier recipients: Bruno Walter, Arturo Toscanini, Eugene Ormindy and other Abravanel, particularly since Walter's death, lsbeing hailed as chief interpreter of Mihler.
