Show 3 Review Editorials Jul At WASHINGTON D. C. t Our tradition tags a high value on intelligence and learning, our natural inclination deduces that every high school graduate should have a college degree. A universal college education is impractical, both from an economic standpoint and the value for all recipients. We have developed a reverence for the sheepskin which endangers the purpose of higher education and threatens to turn our universities into factories. Efforts which turn out the greatest quantity of graduates in assembly line fashion miss the entire point - and neglect the imschool education. portant possibilities of other forms of post-hig- h We think this is already happening, although hard to prove because the tread is a matter of degree and is arguable. Lets face it! We can't do everything. In order to achieve one school education, another will have to be sah goal with crificed. If colleges and universities are to require constant expansion, junior colleges and particularly vocational training will probably suffer. This would be unfortunate. Four years have gone by in the process of getting a new trade technical school underway for the Salt Lake area - it will be some time before this campus is completed though it is sorely needed. OPINION PLEASE (Continued from Page What do. you think of QUESTION: COMMISSIONER Jenson trading his county car fur a land scraper'' (featured in last week's issue of Review) Th e tough question concerns the entrance standards of the state universities. With the growth of population we don't think it would hurt to raise them. We can't help but feel that many students just "getting through" these institutions today would be better off -particularly since they are at public expense - and the public would be better off if there were other institutions available to them. Recently the state board of education issued a policy statement concerning Junior colleges and vocational schools, lney recommended the formation of seven community college districts that function much like boards of education for primary and secondary education work now. This system will be satisfactory if vocational education is not neglected. In an age when automation presses ever greater on our economy - and offers more opportunity, and when technology become more complex, vocational education should assume greater - not lesser importance. 1) significant troop build up in Vietnam. The Day's of '47 in Utah is rich in the traditional heritage of the pioneer so where were the traditional pioneers in the parade ?? The thing that makes the Pasadena Parade of Roses a brilliant and stupendous spectacle is the tradition of having all the floats dressed in living flowers. The tradition of the Mardi-Grparades are always preserved in New Orleans So where were the Pioneers in our Days of '47 'pioneers Parade? That wasnt a pioneer parade Someday some enterprising creative person will chairman a Pioneer Parade and make it a pioneer parade but I wont hold my breath Someday The highlight of the parade came with the great beauty and dignity displayed a lovely blue creation by the John Birch Society float. And so apropos with a huge vulture grimacing on top wings aflutter, (incidently, the left wing was sagging omoniously ) I was a little worried about that Birch float. 1 really didn't think it would make the end of the parade route .
