Monday September 21 RACHMANINOFF: Isle of the Dead DE FALLA: Hat Three-Corner- Tuesday Leggy Look ed Not one of the reports from Paris or New York can say enough about the terrific leggy, narrow look descending on us like a giant tidal wave. The exhilarating strength and suppleness in a trim pair of legs must have sent buyers from all over the world Into real excitement. Not much Is said for bosoms and the shoulders are narrowed to give almost a sparse effect Chanel created wild applause with pants patterened after the old Spanish Our Americans however, seemed to still prefer the style. trim look of tapered pants. Hair up In rollers all hours of the day, a total disregard for neatness In dress and little, If any, make-up- .. .seemed to be the rule. Some folks away from home feel that no one will know them, so why not Just forget the usual amenities. I consider" this an affront. Not only to the people who are forced to receive you, but also to the state, city or what have you, from whence you came. There would never be an appropriate time to relax standards so completely that one forgets the image he presents to others. Motel and hotel owners, restaurant people and others who serve travelers surely must welcome the few who have at least combed their hair, perhaps smoothed a few wrinkles out of sat-l- n clothes and washed their hands and faces a bit. If It were me, I would think, Well, these folks must come from a nice place.. .or It will be good to see them when they come back this way again. This may sound like a very harsh commentary, but after seeing these things, noticing the lack of manners and suffering discourtesy on the highways, the plcutre of the Ugly American becomes much too vivid. In foreign countries where our ways are so easily misunderstood, It would be disaster. We have a great number of wonderful people with lovely manners and consideration for their fellow beings. I wish more could be counted among them. 17 September BEETHOVEN: to be pretty, I began to wonder If been led to believe It was.
