(granite School District Superintendent Administers Board Decisions For 50,000 Area Students ' - f tfcfeaiW,rrif--- Built District Into State9s Largest; Heads 59 Schools , 1,900 Teachers It takes an exceptional man to look out for the welfare of nearly 50,000 youngsters. But that's one of the many duties of Elmer J Hartvigse superintendent of the huge Granite School District. In his seven years as superintendent, Mr. Hartvigsen has seen Granite grow to the largest school district in the state, comprising 59 schools and 50,000 approximately children. Appointed by the board of education every two years, the superintendent keeps his hand on the pulse of Granite by working closely with his supervisors and teachers. As executive officer of the Granite school board, Mr. Hartvigsen is the middle man between the board and the public. A two-wstreet, he makes suggestions and recommendations to the board and when board deare reached, the cisions administers superintendent them. Whether it be payment of a school bill or approval of a principal, Mr. Hartvigsen sees to it that board verdicts kre carried out to He received his bachelor of science degree in mathematics and science from Utah State University and his masters in school administration from the University of Utah. For the next 13 years, Mr. Hartvigsen was teacher and principal of elementary and high schools in Idaho After coming to Utah, the educator was appointed school superintendent in Davis County for eight years and assistant state school superintendent for four years. Asked if he would rather be in the classroom than behind a desk, Mr. Hartvigsen said he liked teaching very much but Ive been out of people.
