Today hundreds of thousands celebrate this date. To us Americans it is known as Ground Hogs Day. Traditionally, the ground hog. who has been underground till winter, on this day comes up out of his burrow. If he chances to set' his shadow, he goes back to sleep for six more weeks. If the day is cloudy and .he does not see his shadow7, Mr. Ground Hog confidently remains above the ground and spring is said to bo quite near. That is the significance this day has for us. When it was first set aside as . a special day it meant quite another thing. It was then Candlemas, a Catholic festival celebrated in com memoration of the presentation and dedication of the Christ Child in the Temple when He w'as forty days old, as w7as Jewish custom. Justinian, in the fifth century, established this commemoration throughout the Eastern empire, and there it is today celebrated as a testival of Christ. But in the Western sphere, introduced by Sergius I in the sixth century, it came to be known as the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and has continued to be celebrated there as such. There was the legend that if Candlemas was bright and sunny there would be more winter; if it was cloudy, spring was at hand. As w7ith so many other Catholic-instituteholidays, Candlemas was the world Protestant with adopted by changes. In America the day is observed with no religious significance, although the weather predictions are very similar to those of Candlemas. 542 how-ever- d i Daffynitions: Wolf A guy who st likes when the eyin is hot Teache'r The pei son who is early when you are late anel late w he'n yeni an early.
