Show Friday, March 19, 1948 SPOUTS TALK ALL-STAT- E A PLAYERS LIFE While up to thetournament the team was treated like kings. Dave and Owen spared no horses to keep the team in the top of con- dition and to keep them ready to play the hardest games. Many of the students failed to see any of the team about in Salt Lake City or in any of its lesser spots, thats because they werent there. Rest, good food and hard playing was the model followed by the team in their regular day. As days went this was the general procedure, see if you could loose weight on a schedule of a basketball player. For those who had trouble sleeping or the restless type, breakfast was served at (10:00) ten oclock. Ham and eggs, milk, lots of hot toast, pretty waitresses (excuse the mind wondering) etc. The boys were then bundled up for a walk ranging for thirty minutes to two hours, dependihg on the game schedule. Reporting back to the hotel, a rest was taken by all the players while Ken Collard stood at the doors to keep the girls in f the halls quiet (thats what he told me, anyway). Dinner was served around four in the afternoon, consisting of steaks and the trimmings to go with it. After walking the meal off, the team would take to the beds again for the pregame rest and beauty sleep. Geting up at seven a skull drill was in session until the cars for the game left. After the game, we then had a dinner to build up the lost energy. Then to bed it was (this is where Russells famous bedtime stories came in to being) and sleep after such a strenuous day. Its no wonder that we won the tournament with such good care and attention. their outstand ing basketball achievements in the state tourn-KEN- T ament. We have two men who won all state laurels because of the way they played for old B.Y. High; Captain Harold Christensen and Norm Christiansen, these men are two of the most valuable ball players in the state. Others also need to be called up for the victory cup and honors, Don Macintosh, LaMar Rawlings, Jae Ballif and others, because of their excellent playing. This star is to the one who didnt start one of the four exciting games, yet did as much, if not more, to win the tournament and the championship trophy than any one else. Kent Broad-hea- d is the well deserving star of the month. Kent Played in both of the early games overtime periods and most of the last two tilts. Going into the game as a man to hold the team together and keep them working as a unit Kent was always working for the team and keeping the goal of victory in sight all the time. He has become a specialist at keeping the ball away from the opponents when the pressure is on. Handling the ball like an history, the crown and throne of Class B Champions were bestowed upon "the fighting Wildcats from Brigham Young high school. All through the tournament the Wildcats displayed a brand of basketball that would be hard to beat. Their teamwork, ball handling defense and terrific offense was outstanding. These points all came out in their victory over Beaver high, If ever a team worked through a tournament the hard way, the Y highers did. In league play every game was undecided until the final gun. In the tournament this also was true. If anything can be proved by this, it is the feeling that the team had of never say die. The Wildcats are champions of B school, and will long be remembered for the way they fought their way to the top in 1948. Kent played his best for the Y. As star of the month, George should be commended for the excellent way he kept the teams moral high and passed on his encouragement to everyone. When the days were drab and all the team were wondering what the others were doing outside the hotel in the big city, George was able to kep the spirits high ana put the minds at rest with a smile and some humor to liven up the day. Kent was able to make the boys feel like they were missing none of the outside fun and goings on at the tournament, but made us all feel like we were getting the best of everything and the others were the ones who were missing the fun. Kent has an optimism that made the team feel that they had to win or else. On the first day in Salt Lake City he was worried about where we would put the trophy. On the second day he wondered if the cup would be big enough to celebrate the great victory. And on the final day he had plans made for a new trophy case to put the first-plaaward in. Kent kept the whole team in the fight from start to finish. On the floor or off the floor, Kent was for the team all the way. As the days wore on, the games got tougher and the grind harder, but no one was ready for more action and ready to win more than George. As the star of the month Kent Broadhead for outstanding duty performed when called upon in the tightest spots in the Utah state tournament. and dog. Without my money I was forced to ascena the heights of the field house gaily selling two or three hundred hot dogs (to the poor starved fools). But after the game we also had fun. And Marion and Anne, hmm, what would two nice little girls like wou do with a CENSORED. We hear Hotel Utah was also quite a jovial place. Joyce Christiansen and Elaine, we hear, were among those cele brating. And, Elaine, some of the senior girls would be overjoyed to see that large college (we believe college) boy you were with, and please tell some of them if his hair was in a bulldog or curly. High Wildcats scored a 33 to 31 victory over the Wasps of Wasatch, in another overtime period. The game from beginning to end was a thrilling ball tussle. The score was tied many times as the teams battled. The Wildcats and their brilliant ball handling and teamwork proved to be too much for the Wasatch crew. This factor has proved one of the main features of all the Wildcat wins. B.Y.
