Thirty-tw- o states, including Utah, have mandatory hunter safety education laws. Utahs programs are on the forefront of hunter safety education. Utahs Lee Kay Hunter Education Center on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley is the only one of its kind in the U S. Utah also has a hunter safety and shooting sports program built into Utah State Universitys Extension and programs. According to Ed Cornia, Utah hunter safety education coordinator, there were only nine hunting accidents last year. This does not account, though, acfor the 70 percent of cidents that take place in the home. These accidents can be considered hunting related because they often involve hunting guns Utah law requires anyone under the age of 21 to pass a minimum of 10 hours in a hunter safety education course before purchasing a hunting license. gun-relat- 6-- 2 MUSCLES reminders are in order. One problem we continue to encounter involves tagging big game. The tag must have the appropriate notches cut out and removed not just sliced or a knife point pushed through a part of it. This must be done immediately after the kill and the tag must then be attached to the carcass. We do allow an exception to tying the tag on the carcass immediately and that is, when the animal must be dragged, but the tab must be notched correctly, detached and carried in your pocket, wallet, etc. When the carass reaches your camp, truck or horse, the tag must be attached immediately. Please dont put the officer in the position of having to read your mind and try to determine your intentions that is a judges responsibility. Another problem area is the evidence of sex regulation. We have already run into this problem during the elk season and it generally turns out to be a misunderstanding on the part of the hunter. The evidence of sex must remain attached to the carcass either the head or sex organs must be attached to, at least, one of the quarters. This is no big problem even if you are miles from camp. If you wish to leave the head at the kill site, simply leave the sex organs attached. Dont have an animal hanging in camp with the head lying in the back of your truck and expect this to be acceptable: attached is the key word here. Transporting another persons big game is another easily solved problem. Many times a successful hunter wants to stay in camp, but also wants to get his deer to a locker in town. The license andor permit must also accompany the transportation slip, which is good for use within the state. Each year we find a number of deer dumped at the city dump or along the roadway that have appeared to be in edible condition. If you do have game that you do not want, we have a list of names of people who want andor need the meat. If you will call us, we will make arrangements to dispose of unwanted meat. Remember, wasting wildlife is a misdemeanor violation We are in the process of conducting deer classification (doefawn and buckdoe ratios) throughout the region and there appears to be an abnormal number of very small bucks this year. Their antlers are just about the size of their ears so a good pair of field glasses would be a great item to pack around Have a good hunt and good luck. ?j b 't Hr UTAH WATERFOWL swim along in near Ouray, Saturday. the waters at Pelican Lake Coming Sports Events Sophomore Football, Uintah at Payson Volleyball, Spnngville at Uintah Football, Payson at Uintah Football, Union at Lehi Deer Opener .
