Marketing---Threshin- g The Uintah Basin Alfalfa Seed Cron is rapidly beinJer cut, and stacked or threshed. Given favorable weather, the whole job will be done m record time this fall Those growers whose crons are late are anxiously wondering whether thyy have enough rine seed to make a profitable crop or wnether they would btter take chances on the frost and try to mature the wll filled green burrs on the tips of the hay. Some of the points to consider are: (1) at what stage is seed mature enough to be harvested? (2) what damage is to be expected if there is a frost? (3) What are the comparative percentages of ripe and green burrs and what ana the comparative aniowuts of seed in thp ripe burrs and in the green ones? (4) How much longer is it going to take to mature the seed in the gree., burrs? and (5) What is going to happen to the ripe burrs whilj we are waiting for the green ones! to mature? Probably ther.. are more of them, but these are the, most important que- One big seed grower has had to stop threshing because his stacks that thev would not thresh. gt Two weeks ago we offered some suggestions on stacking. The ripe burrs wiere. ripe, but the A hard green ones contained very green undeveloped sed. tieze would kill them and they would be very small and black. About had oi tne burrs were ripe the other half very green. Tne ripe Purrs had from two to five seeds in each curl. The green ones had seven, eight and nine. If these green burrs mature their seed, he shall have twice as much as if he cuts now even though he should loose all the seed now ripe. If he saves all of it he will have three times as much, but it will probably take at least ten days to mature these freen burrs and the ripe ones may fall off in the meantime. Now it happens that in thison par-to ticular crop, the seed now ripe could hardly be counted was pay harvest and threshing expenses, so' this growersifproblem he but now. is breakeven lucky a easy to settle. DONT try to get through too quick, you are interested getting the seed into the sacks at a reasonable cost. Moving the stack of hay through the machine is only a secondary consideration.. in. MARKETING THE CROP . Due to considerable carryover of last season, it is quite like-l- v that the seed trade will be slow to absorb this years crop.
