If you cannot da anything to aid and assist young men, you ought to abstain from throwing any obstacles in their way. But can you not do something to help them forward? You can at least .say God speed to them, and you can say it feelingly from your heart You little know of how. much benefit to boys and young men encouraging counsel, given fitly and may be; and in tho great day of account, such words addressed to those in need of them you may find reckoned among your good deeds. Then help the toys who try to help themselves. You cau easily recall simple words of kindness addressed to yourself in your childhood and youth, and you would like now to kbs tho lips that spoke them though they may long since havo been sealed with the silence of death, and covered by the clods of the valley. fall upon a sensitive a how they may bruise row bone Mherewith to make savory soup nor shank for his dog, for we wager this enterprising farmer owned no canine; but he asked for bones by the quantity, hones by the ton. If he would furnish barrels to remove them when filled uith the waste bones, would the butcher save theln if he was remunerated for his slight trouble? The butcher happened to be an ' obliging craftman and readily agreed to save the bones. How many do you think you can save? queried the farmer. A barrel per wcck, sometimes more, was the reply. Probably seventy-fiv- e barrels would be the amount which could bo gathered in a year from this one market There is another meat market in the village which might supply at least a3 much more. One hundred and fifty barrels of bones in a year, weighing - say 100 pounds each, and aggregating seven and one-ha- lf tons. What would the farmer do with them? At home the firmer had a large cauldron kettle set in an arch. After breaking tho bones as fine as possible they would be placed in this kettle in layers, Intermingled with about half their weight of unlcached wood ashes and a sprinkling of fresh lime. The mass would lie moistened and then subjected to tho heat for two or three days, which reduce the mass to a pliable conditions, so that most of the bones could be easily pulverised and mixed with the ashes and lime. The harder bones would be subjected to the process again when the kettle was tilizer would be obtained, worth at the market at thirty or forty dollars per ton, and if applied to acres of wheat, captwenty-fiv- e able of increasing the yield of grain ten or twelve bushels per acre. And besides this immediate gain proceeding crops would-b- e beautiful. , Will not this operation pay? IIow many hundreds and thousands of tons of bones are wasted yearly in western New York alone, which the depleted wheat fields barely need to enable them to yield the rich measure of grain they did when the Genesee valley was the paradise of the wheat ' grower? AV. - - Desert inf Bojs. We like boys who try to help themselves. Every one ought to be friendly to them. Tiie boys of energy and ambition, who make a manly effort to do something for themselves, are tho hope of the country. JL A shabby old gentleman walked into a jewellers shop in Bond street, and asked to bo allowed to look at some topazes. Three or four were accordingly shown him, and he quickly selected the best, which he said was hardly good enough. Ah, but yon see these said the stones are expensive, rather patronisingly. jeweller, can assure jou tho one you have chosen would answer any ordinary purpose. The old. gentleman looked around him In a dissatisfied way, and presently caught sight of a large and beautiful stone in a cor ner of the jewellers glass case. That looks moro like what I want, said he; let me look at that one, will you? It will be very expensive, sir very, indeed; more, I dare say, tlian you would like to give. The stone you have is very good, sir. In a quiet voice, the old gentleman asked if the stone was for sale or only on view. At this rebuke tho jeweller produced it, naming a high price.
