Show THE HEIGHT OF OCEAN WAVES L gh keepers prove truth of tall stor es told that ocean waves run mountain high no one ever believed unless he was credulous indeed the phrase is a highly exaggerated floure of speech but the observations 0 keepers of lighthouses in exposed sit lations hive proved that saves run high enough in great storms to make very respectable hills some years ago the steamer that carried supplies to the lighthouse on tillamook rock on the coast of oregon was able to make a landing and establish corn mum catlon with the light kepers after a series of storms only by astren bous endeavors cohering a period of six weeks the waves of the pacific had torn iwai the wharves and other con on the rock even carrying off timbers which were riveted to the rock As yet however the lantern had remained untouched but the storm increased the waves rose in height and soon dashed against the lantern which was feet above the 11 of the sea final ly the water washed over the top of the lighthouse coming in through the ventilators overhead th keepers were compelled to work desperately all highl long to keep the lamp they continually contini ally in tear that tl e 1 gats in the glasses looking seaward bould be broken in by the force of the aves and that they themselves sl id be washed out into the sea to certain death but the iron lattice work outside the windows saved the panes from destruction the 1 keepers who were old sailors affirmed that no experience on shipboard could be as horrible as this long struggle with the storm at the summit of the lighthouse they would have been elal to take refuge even in a frail ship the tillamook light had on previous occasions been w ached over complete ly by wives the same thing hap bened to the eddystone light off the coast of england and to the light at de brechot off the east coast of france both of which are about one hundred and fifty feet in height it seems well established therefore that waves may mount to a height feet above the general level we all make mistakes but there Is no excuse for making the same mis take repeatedly |
