Show the metropolis what Is going on in new york city told in interesting manner MORE MONEY NEEDED TO finah BRANCH LIBRARIES YORK new york finds the NEW magnificent gift of made by andrew carnegie to build 78 branch libraries in this city is tar from being eno agh at the time the gift was made in 1901 it was supposed that number of branches wo ild be ample to pro tide the reading public tor many deais only thirty nine of these branches have been completed and the commission in charge of the work is already considering the advisability of a proposal for the erection 0 awen t two more making the total number of blanches instead of 78 the figures give some idea of the growth of the great metropolis in the past six deais by the d of next ear 59 of the new carnegie branch buildings will be ready for use about the same time the funds provided by mr carnegie will be nearing echaus alon the sum of was given by mr carnegie after the library trus tees had figured what would be need ed to equip every section of new york with a branch library but the ad vance in building materials has put the figures of the estimate completely to the bad certain it Is that the sum will come far short of finishing the 78 buildings first proposed and accord ing to the revised estimates twenty two moie will be needed where the money Is to come from has not et been determined but new york feels certain mr carnegie will not allow the work to lag for want of funds the additional twenty two buildings proposed will not be needed tor some years yet and in the mean time the completion of the first 78 will be pushed forward and those re to be located and elected will be placed where they will accommodate the largest percentage of the alon A year from now the building commission expects to be able to furnish mr carnegie with a complete report showing just what has been done and what is to be done the great philanthropist is expected to take the hint and the commission feels little doubt that a few more millions will be made available immediately it they are needed the libraries of new york this year will cost the over for maintenance and when all of the 78 branches originally proposed are completed the annual alon is expected to run at least 1 but new york is cheerful over the prospect there can be no better investment the think the city has already spent about 3 for sites and books tor the carnegie branca es and ever citizen of isea york Is satisfied the expense to the city for the remaining sites and fur of the buildings yet to be erected will probably run a couple of millions but new yorkers take kindly to the libraries and their influx ence for good in the neighborhoods where there are located is immense MENTAL STRAIN CAUSE OF SOME ECCENTRIC DOINGS and bankers of wall
